Page 4 — Wednesday, August 26, 2009, The Millen News Opinions, yours and ours The Chatter Box By Deborah Bennett In recent weeks I have received a flood of telephone calls from people who want to “verify our free listing” in some type of directory. I never knew there were so many free directories in circulation or that the newspaper was listed in any of them. What really annoys me, however, is that out of the dozen or so “representatives” that have called the office, all had such heavy foreign accents that I could only understand about half of what was said. And on top of that, I had to “spell” everything for them - street address, city, my name, etc. Communication is essential to all business dealings, and it is especially important when attempting to do business over the telephone. So, please, put someone on the phone that speaks and understands English. This is the United States, and we speak English here. Medicare is a government run health plan. If you are wondering what kind of treat ment you will get with a gov ernment run health plan—look at Medicare. The Veterans Administration is a government run health care system. They have their own hospitals, pharmacies and doctors. They provide depend able care, free of charge. Vet erans pay only for their pre scriptions on a graded scale depending on individual in come. The private health care plans are the worse. They can can cel your coverage entirely, or raise your premium so high you can’t pay it, or they will refuse to cover all of your health care treatment. Many families have gone bankrupt because of the medical bills that private health care refused to pay. We pay the administrative costs for insurance companies while Wall Street rakes in the profits; CEO’s getting paid multi-million dollar salaries per year; and desk jockey’s getting $250,000 or more per year. The brokers and sales men get paid pretty well too. The cost of those multibillion- dollar office buildings with posh furnishings and million dollar monthly utility bills comes out of our pockets. When I was growing up, the number of times a person saw a doctor or hospital from birth to grown (18) may have been at most 25 times unless you were a sickly child. Nowa days kids see a doctor that many times in their first few years. Think about this. When you go to the doctor, you will be given an appointment to re turn in two weeks, and the doctor will ask how you are doing and you will say, “Fine,” and he will say, “Fine,” and present you with a bill. Why this added expense - malprac tice law suit prevention. Something has to be done about the insurance companies and Wall Street traders. They are draining us dry. They are a bunch of heartless, greedy vipers. Nothing can be done to force them to be fair because we claim to live in a free mar ket society. If price controls were tried, they would be cry ing socialism or communism. So, if the government starts an insurance plan and offers it at an affordable price, then the private insurance companies will have to lower prices to compete or go out of business. Once there was a silly ol’ ram, thought he’d punch a hole inadam...
