Dove season opens this Friday
Hunters statewide can cel
ebrate the beginning of dove
season at noon Saturday, Sept.
5. Long-awaited opening day
is traditionally considered the
beginning of fall hunting sea
son, and with the numerous
wildlife management area
hunts scheduled, it is the per
fect opportunity to introduce
children and grandchildren to
the sport.
The official 2009-2010 dove
seasons are Sept. 5-20, Oct.
10-18, and Nov. 26 - Jan. 9.
Shooting hours are noon until
sunset on opening day (Sept.
5) of the first season and one-
half hour before sunrise to sun
set for the remaining two sea
sons. Sunrise and sunset times
for each day are found in the
2009-2010 Georgia Hunting
Seasons and Regulations guide
or online at
www.georgiawildlife.com .
The daily bag limit is 15
doves per hunter. Additionally,
there have been some reports
of white-winged doves in
Georgia. White-winged doves
may be harvested, but count to
ward the daily bag limit of 15.
Any autoloading or other re
peating shotgun must be
plugged to hold no more than
three shotshells while hunting
doves. As always, hunters
must obtain permission from
landowners before hunting on
private property and please re
spect the land by cleaning up
spent shells, leaving gates the
way they were found and re
moving all trash.
Dove hunters 16 years of age
and older must possess a Geor
gia hunting license and a free
Migratory Bird Harvest Infor
mation Program Permit (HIP
Permit). Those hunting Wild
life Management Areas
(WMA) also must possess a
WMA license. Hunters may
purchase licenses at more than
600 license agent locations, by
phone at 1-800-366-2661 or
online at www.georgia-
wildlife.com .
For more information on
dove hunting rules and regu
lations, public dove fields and
conditions, or adult/child dove
hunts, hunters should review
the 2009-2010 Georgia Hunt
ing Seasons and Regulations
guide, available at
www.gohuntgeorgia.com or at
any Wildlife Resources Divi
sion Game Management of
fice.
Updated and accurate har
vest rate estimates facilitate the
successful management of
doves. As such, the U.S. Geo
logical Survey, Biological Re
search Division and the U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Service in
cooperation with several
states, including Georgia, ini
tiated a dove trapping and
banding project in 2003.
Hunters can participate in bands and reporting band num-
this conservation effort by ex- bers to the USFWS by calling
amining harvested doves for 1-800-327-BAND.

We Live Between Two Poles
There is an old Jewish custom (attributed to the 19th century Rabbi, Simcha Bunim) of
carrying two slips of paper around, one in each pocket, with a different message
on each slip of paper. On the one slip of paper is written, “The entire universe
was created just for me.” And, on the other is written, “I am but dust and ashes.”
There is surely much wisdom in this. On the one hand, God has made all of us in His
image, and loves us deeply and has veritably created the universe for us. On the
other hand, we are short-lived creatures who will perish like everything else.
Catholics are told on Ash Wednes-day to “Remember that you are dust and to dust
you shall return.” Ash Wednes-day marks the beginning of Lent, a season which ends
with the joyous celebration of Easter, which essentially celebrates the fact that
Jesus has risen. By extension, we as the church, will also rise from the ashes. We
do well to always keep in mind that we live between the poles of finitude and eternity.
Behold, I have taken upon myself to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes.
