Obituary
Alma Rita Parker Gay,
88, died October 2
Mrs. Alma Rita Parker Gay, 88, died Friday, Oct. 2, at her
daughter’s residence under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice.
Funeral services were held 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, in the chapel
of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro with the Rev.
Phil Wilson officiating, assisted by Rev. Lamar Little.
Interment was in the Upper Mill Creek Primitive Baptist Church
Cemetery.
The Bulloch County native lived in Emanuel County most of
her life. Mrs. Gay was a retired seamstress and a homemaker.
She was a member of the El Bethel Baptist Church where she
was a Sunday School teacher for pre-school children for many
years, a member of the WMU and a member of the Senior Adult
Sunday School Class. She was a loving mother, grandmother
and great-grandmother, who enjoyed sharing gifts that she cre
ated with her family and extended family. Mrs. Gay enjoyed the
summer vacations that many of her nieces and nephews spent
with her throughout her life. She will be remembered for her
love of crafting pageant dresses for her granddaughters and any
one that had a desire to wear one of her creations. She shared
many gifts of blankets (referred to by her grandchildren as
"Sniffles”) with her family and friends. Mrs. Gay was preceded
in death by her husband of 54 years, Clifford Gay; an infant
daughter, Carolyn Gay, and a son-in-law, Belton Baird.
Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Nancy Baird of
Twin City and Lynette and Conner Berry of Statesboro; two sons
and daughters-in-law, James C. and Mary Gay of Garfield and
Richard and Theresa Gay of Metter; 13 grandchildren; four step-
grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and seven step-great-
grandchildren; a brother, Albert Parker of Eden; and her long
time dedicated caregiver, Patricia Hodges. Many nieces and neph
ews also survive.
Pallbearers were her grandsons.
Honorary pallbearers were members of the El Bethel Senior
Adult Sunday School Class.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to
the Ogeechee Area Hospice, P.O. Box 53, Statesboro, Ga. 30459.

Don 9 1Be Too Critical
When there are disagreements, especially over things like politics and religion, which
involve values that are near and dear to us, sometimes we cannot help but be critical of
rather minor differences of opinion. However, this habit of criticizing what others
believe, besides being potentially obnoxious, often puts up a wall between us,
thereby preventing us from genuinely listening to the other person and what they
are saying. When people discuss these sorts of issues, it may be best to simply lis
ten and try to really understand what they are saying, and perhaps even why they
are saying it. In so doing, we may actually find some area of commonality
between our view and theirs, rather than just looking for the differences. And
although this can be a difficult thing to do, especially if we are convinced that they
are wrong, with time and some effort, listening sympathetically will allow us to more
fully hear what others are actually saying to us.
The mind of the wise makes his speech judicious, and adds persuasiveness to his lips.
Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body. R.S.V.
