Eagles trample
The Jenkins County High
School War Eagles traveled to
Wheeler County Friday night
and came away with a 42-15
victory over the Bulldogs.
The War Eagles struck first
after recovering a fumbled
punt. Dondre DeJesus scored
on a 1-yard run to cap a 6-play,
37 yard drive. Remi Gomez’s
PAT made it 7-0.
The War Eagles’ defense
forced their second punt of the
quarter. The offense started at
their own 13 yard-line.
Charles Reynolds scored on a
1 -yard run capping all play,
87 yard drive. Gomez’s PAT
made the score 14-0.
The Eagles scored on their
next possession on a 16-yard
pass from Will Brinson to
Akeem Young. Jenkins
County scored again on a 16-

MaKenzie Kelly wins 2 nd place in
statewide model search
It began as a teen-oriented model search competition, but by
the time all was said and done, Nicholson
Photography had received entries from
models ranging from infant to 28 years
of age — and even had couple’s entries,
too. John Nicholson and wife Eileen re
ported that calls came in from across the
state and beyond.
MaKenzie Kelly of Millen, daughter of
Christina Coleman and Tom Kelly, sub
mitted her entry and was chosen as the
second place winner. She received a $200
prize and photography session.
The 10 finalists and winners were de
termined by three photographers connected to the model and fash
ion industry in New York, Athens and Los Angeles. The Los
Angeles judge. Any Pearlman, who made the final determination
of winners, has specialized in glamour and swim wear photogra
phy of women for the retail publishing, advertising and editorial
markets for over 20 years. Mr. Pearlman is noted for discovering
new models and travels to exotic locations for his numerous cal
endar and poster projects. He also photographs in the studio and
works with actors, celebrities or advertising clients on assign
ment.
MaKenzie stated that winning second place over hundreds of
entries was a dream come true and an honor. She hopes to com
pete in other model searches.

JCFEC mentoring program receives grant
The Jenkins County Family Enrichment Center’s (JCFEC)
mentoring program is the recipient of a $1,000 grant from the
Swainsboro Wal-Mart store.
The grant is part of the Wal-Mart Good Works Program and
the funds will be used to help provide services and activities for
the JCFEC mentoring program. The program is designed to ac
commodate a minimum of 30 students, ages 9-16, who are paired
with an adult mentor from the community. The mentors commit
to spending 30 minutes weekly with the students for the entire
school year.
“I am just so proud of all our mentors,” commented Debbie
Sharpe, CIS/mentoring coordinator, JCFEC. “They are really
dedicated to commit to this time the entire school year with a
student.”

Brandon Watson scored on a
52-yard run in the fourth quar
ter to closeout the night’s scor
ing.

ing with three rushes for 52
yards and a touchdown. Will
Brinson led in passing, 10-15-
168, touchdown. Receiving
was led by Akeem Young, 4-
62, touchdown.
Chelsea Hodges
participates in state
softball
championship
Chelsea Hodges, daughter of
Rex and Janet Hodges, for
merly of Millen, participated in
the Georgia High School As
sociation Class AAAAA state
softball championship in Co
lumbus Oct. 23-25. Chelsea
was the starting leftfielder for
Houston County High School
which advanced to the finals
by defeating Union Grove,
Kennesaw Mountain, Chapel
Hill and Collins Hill before
falling to Collins Hill in the fi
nal two games of the three-day, double elimination tournament.
Chelsea had eight hits in 15 at-bats for the tournament.
During her career, Chelsea was a member of four Region cham
pion teams, two at Dodge County High and two at Houston
County and reached the state tournament all four years. Houston
County set a school record with 31 wins and six losses.
Chelsea is the granddaughter of Joyce Hodges-Hite and Daris
Sutton, both of Millen.
Brett Jenkins receives Kasey Lane
Memorial Scholarship
Brett Jenkins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Jenkins, is the re
cipient of the 2009 Kasey Lane Memorial Scholarship. From left,
Wade Parker, Jenkins County Extension Service coordinator,
presents $500 scholarship to Brett. This scholarship is awarded
to a student majoring in agriculture, forestry, or family and con
sumer sciences. Money for the scholarship is raised at the an
nual Agriculture Appreciation Supper and donations from the
community. Brett is currently a student at Georgia Southern Uni
versity.
