ADVANCE YOUR GOALS
Sometimes the sheer size of a task has a paralyzing effect on us. How do
you overcome the blank page or computer screen in front of you when you
know you have a twenty-page report to write? The answer is, “one word at
a time.” When I was in graduate school and procrastinating getting starte-
don my dissertation, I was effectively paralyzed by the size and scope of
my task, since I knew I had to write roughly two-hundred pages of scholarly
material. Sensing what was going on, my advisor suggested that I write a
page per day, and this advice worked wonders. I certainly couldn’t sit down
and just write two hundred pages, but I could write a page a day. The moral
of the story here is that doing some small bit every day to advance towards
our goal will get us there, no matter how big the goal. Even the journey of a
thousand miles begins with a single step. And you can always go one more
step, which eventually gets us to our goal.
