VFW holds recognition party
Local Veterans of Foreign
Wars (VFW) Commander
Byron Scogins presented the
All American Awards to mem
bers of VFW Post 2776 dur
ing the group’s annual party.
Dinner was provided for VFW
and American Legion mem
bers and their wives with
Larry Thompson preparing a
delectable catfish stew, fried
catfish, Boston butt and nu
merous side dishes as well as
dessert selections. Beverages
of choice were available
This has become an annual
event at the Scogins home
with this being the third year.
Scogins stated it provides an
opportunity to recognize and
show appreciation for local
veterans and their service to
country. Over 30 were in at
tendance.

Celebration of Education
Essay winners named
In an effort to foster student
awareness regarding the impor
tance of a post-secondary edu
cation, East Georgia College
and Southeastern Technical
College recently sponsored the
fifth annual Celebration of Edu
cation Essay Contest for el
ementary, middle and high
school students. The Celebra
tion of Education Awards Cer
emony was held Nov. 19 at East
Georgia College in Swainsboro
where the winners of the essay
contest were announced.
Jenkins County High School
(JCHS) senior, Jessica Head,
was named the top essay win
ner from a field of 10 finalists.
Head was awarded a $500
scholarship to her choice of East
Georgia College or Swainsboro
Technical College. Sophomore,
Nathan Lewis, was awarded
third place for his essay in the
high school division. Of the
seven surrounding counties par
ticipating in the essay contest,
the Jenkins County school sys
tem was recognized for having
the most participants in the con
test. Jenkins County Middle
School submitted 254 essays
and JCHS submitted 123 essays.

Kersey, Javis to
exchange vows
Plans have been finalized for the wedding of Jodi Far
row Kersey and Jim Jarvis. The wedding is planned
for 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, at Oak Hill Baptist Church
in Millen.
The bride-elect is the daughter of Don and Martha Far
row of Summertown, and the granddaughter of Sybol L.
Toole of Metter.
The groom-elect is the son of Eloise Jarvis and the late
James F. Jarvis, Sr. of Lakeland, Florida.
All friends and family are invited to attend.

The Jenkins County Board of Commissioners would
like to request contractors offer the County a bid on
replacing the kitchen floor tile and kitchen hallway
carpet at the Jenkins County Senior Citizen Center.
Bid quotes should be based on industrial grade tile
for both of these areas, kitchen and kitchen hallway.
Bids will be accepted until 5:00 P.M. Monday,
December 14, 2009. These bids will be opened at
the regular bi-monthly meeting to be held in the
Conference Room on the third floor of the Courthouse
Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at 7:00 P.M.
The Jenkins County Board of Commissioners reserves
the right to reject any or all bids received and
opened at the appointed time.
