"1 am Georgia 4-H"
for Jenkins County youths
Young people in Jenkins County know that they are Georgia 4-H!
Local 4-H'ers are proud to continue to say they are Georgia 4-H. This year they
participated in activities such as District Project Achievement, State Council, Fall
Forum, Project S.A.F.E., and many other activities that will enhance their lives
for years to come.
Jenkins County 4-H'ers help the community* but they also need help from the
community. They need support through funding, volunteers and guidance in
their project areas.
"Jenkins County 4-H programs offer so much to the youths here," said Wade
Parker, Jenkins County Extension Service Coordinator with the University of
Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences or Family and
Consumer Sciences. "There is a project tin 4-H that interests almost everyone.
Participants find what's for them through learning and judging events, fun
activities, community volunteering or statewide competition."
More than 535 active 4-H members from 5th-12th grade are enrolled in
Jenkins County, Extension 4-H agents meet with 4-H members, Jenkins County
meets in school, after, and other special dubs. In 2010, more than 155,000
youths participated in Georgia 4-H programs.
Besides projects and competitions, members can go to special camps and
exciting events all over the state and nation. Special UGA football and
basketball days, camps at the beach, in the mountains, in the city and at Rock
Eagles and even trips to Washington, D.C, offer exciting ways to learn while
having fun.
In Jenkins County, our 4-H activities this year included: District Project
Achievement, Summer Camp, officers running for State Board, Fall Forum and
Junior Conference just for starters.
But the 4-H'ers are not the only ones having fun. Adult volunteers work with
4-H'ers helping them prepare for competitions, sharing their knowledge with
them and, most importantly, spending time with them.
"I don't know what we'd do without volunteers," Wade Parker said. "They
work with our 4-H'ers on so many projects and teams. A few of our vofunteer
led activities are Youth Summit, Project S.A.F.E. and Junior Conference."
Jenkins County 4-H programming is handled by 4-H Program Assistant Elaine
Lanier. She meets with 4-H'ers to update them on various events that are
coming up in the program. Her in-school dub meetings supplement the
curriculum the teachers nave to follow. Elaine does a very good job delivering
4-H programs with a skeleton staff.
Many volunteers are 4-H alumni, so they recognize the benefits of 4-H.
If you want to find why YOU are Georgia 4-H, call the cooperative extension
office at (478) 982-4408 or come by the office at 434 Barney Avenue.
