Local leaders joined state
transportation and public
safety officials onboard a
special passenger train
Wednesday, Oct. 5, for a trip
from Savannah to Millen and
return to emphasize the need
for greater public safety
awareness at railroad-high
way crossings. The Operation
Lifesaver train was spon
sored by Norfolk Southern
and Georgia Operation Life-
saver.
The trip was designed to
show community leaders and
first responders what train
crews see every day when
motorists ignore signs and
signals at highway/rail cross
ings. A video camera
mounted on the front of the
engine with monitors in the
passenger cars enabled riders
to view the track ahead.
According to statistics
compiled by the Federal Rail
road Administration, 2010
saw 2,013 incidents between
motor vehicles and trains na
tionwide in which 260 people
were killed and 845 people
injured. Georgia saw 68 in
cident where seven people
were killed and 25 people
were injured.
The issue of trespassing on
railroad tracks and equipment
will also be addressed. In the
U.S. last year, 442 people
were killed and 388 injured

while trespassing on railroad
property. In Georgia, 16
people were killed and 14
people were injured while
trespassing.
The group of approximately
120 persons enjoyed lunch in
Millen at Miss Shelby’s Cafe
before the return trip to Sa
vannah during which time
Mayor King Rocker read a
proclamation declaring Oct. 5
as “Operation Lifesaver Day”
in Millen.
