Scogins attends national meeting
Byron Scogins, Commander of
VFW Post 2776, Millen, recently
attended National VFW Meetings
conducted in San Antonio, Texas.
Presenters included U.S. Sena
tor Kay Bailey Hutchinson. Texas
Governor and Presidential Can
didate Rick Perry, Presidential
Candidate Mitt Romney. Deputy
Secretary Of Veterans Affairs,
Gould Scott, former USMC
Commandant Conway and
Rocky Bleier, a motivational
speaker very active with the
Wounded Warrior Program
Rocky is a Vietnam Veteran
who endured severe injuries to
both legs. Over 100 pieces of
shrapnel was dug out of his foot.
He had been an All American
football player for Notre Dame.
Doctors advised he would never
walk without a limp again. He
subjected himself to a tenacious
personal rehabilitation program
with a determination that is diffi
cult to fathom. Although wearing
two different size shoes, he re
turned to football playing for the
World Champion Pittsburgh
Steelers. He gained over 4,000
yards in four years and four su
per bowl rings. Needless to say.
he is very effective in working
with wounded warriors returning
from baq and Afghanistan.
Mr. Scogins stated. “He may
be the most inspiring person I
have ever had the pleasure of
meeting.”
Mr. Scogins and other All
American Commanders were
recognized and attended a break
fast with the VFW Commander
in Chief.

Benches donated to state park
Four benches have been donated to Magnolia Springs State Park by the Friends of
Magnolia Springs State Park. They were hand-made by Gerald Keller of Kellwood
and paid for with funds earned through volunteer work by members of Friends and
Buckhead-Fort Lawton Brigade 2102, Sons of Confederate Veterans. The state of
fice of Friends of Georgia State Parks provided $2 for each volunteer hour, and the
funds were used for park improvements and other needs from flowers to meals for
work crews from other parks who helped with clearing fallen trees following last
springs’ storms. (Photo contributed)
