Tag renewal
notices
delayed for
October-
December
Renewal tag notices (vehicle registrations) for the
months of October, November and December have
been delayed, according to the Georgia Department of
Revenue.
Recently, the Department of Revenue determined that
the vendor contracted to print and mail the renewal no
tices on behalf of the local tag offices encountered several
operational and production related issues and was unable
to fulfill their contractual obligations. This resulted in a
severe delay in the mailing of notices to vehicle owners
for the months of October, November and December.
October renewal notices should have been received by
motor vehicle owners by the first of October. The Depart
ment of Revenue is working on getting the November
notices mailed as quickly as possible.
Although not required, renewal notices are mailed to
motor vehicle owners in participating counties. Vehicle
owners are required to pay the full renewal amount on
time, normally the motor vehicle owner’s birthday or
based on business name.
Anyone who believes they should have received a
renewal notice, but has not, should contact the Jenkins
County Tax Commissioner’s office at (478) 982-4925.

for heroism
By Deborah Bennett
Millen News editor
On Labor Day, Sept. 7th,
a two-vehicle collision on
Ftwy. 17 North in Jenkins
County resulted in one
death and critical injuries
to four others. If not for
the heroism of Ocea Scott
the number of deaths might
have been greater.
Mr. Scott happened upon
the accident and sped into
action, pulling a mother,
Blair Ghetti, and her nine
months old baby, Ashtyn
Ghetti, from the vehicle
moments before it exploded
and was consumed by fire.
Killed in the accident was
Shirley Miller. Critically
injured were her son and
daughter, Michael Miller
and Terri Miller. Michael
Crowder, the boyfriend of
Miss Ghetti and father of
Ashytn, was also critically
injured. Ashtyn was not
injured in the accident.
Mr. Scott was recognized
for his actions Wednesday,
Oct. 7th, at the Jenkins
County Senior Citizen Cen
ter when family members
of those involved in the
accident, members of the
Jenkins County Emergency
Medical Services (EMS),
and local citizens gathered to
acknowledge his acts of valor.
Millen City Councilman
Robin Scott welcomed those
attending after which Ms.
Betty Jean Kirkland presented
a solo performance of “Amaz

was given by Rev. Reginald
Scott, prior to everyone enjoy
ing a meal catered by Sheila

so special.”
Mr. and
Mrs. Ghetti
expressed ap
preciation to
everyone who
assisted dur
ing the accident, especially to Mr. Scott, stating that they believed
he had “an angel” there with him in the form of a deceased
family member.
Mr. and Mrs. Crowder presented Mr. Scott with a piece of
driftwood know as an "Indian Chief’, explaining that they chose
this as a gift because it represented wisdom, strength and honor,
characteristics they believed that Mr. Scott possessed.
Mr. Scott, displaying another characteristic of heroes - humil

that I needed to do.”
