A Review of 2020 in Sports
-Coach Brad
Twas the week of Christmas
Not a ball was bouncing, and fans had little to do.
Players were practicing and coaches were preparing
the sports editor had to look back and just review.
Instead of writing about an exciting game
Or fill your head with stats,
we will look back on a strange sports year gone by.
We will gaze forward to the hope
of a new year to come
While you celebrate the holidays,
look forward to the year to come.
Sports will not be silent always
get ready and be prepared there is more
games to play.
The players will need their fans, so make plans
to come and cheer.
While 2020 has been a strange
year in our nation, it has been
no different in the sports world.
Rather than finding out who the
champions of 2020 would be,
we all waited and wondered
what event would be cancelled
next and if new seasons would
even begin.
Sports throughout the land
saw disruption after disruption
caused by the Coronavirus.
It seemed to start with the
NBA postponing games,
and then putting a stoppage
of play. This was followed
by the cancellation of the
college basketball season and
eventually the delayed start of
Major League Baseball.
College spring sports were
cancelled, and of course so
was high school spring sports.
Spring was a quiet time for
sports, yet we have finally
made it through for the most
part.
However, before the shut
down there was sports being
played. In January, the Jenkins
County War Eagles Middle
School girls’ basketball
team was able to celebrate a
regional championship. After
a successful regular season,
they swept through the playoffs
brining home the trophy.
As we moved into February,
the high school basketball
teams were continuing to move
through their season. The boys’
basketball team had a great
season, moving to the first
round of the playoffs.
They would lose in the
first round, but what a great
accomplishment to make it to
the playoffs and finish with a
winning season with a 14-11
record. The high school girls’
basketball team had some
ups and downs finishing a
rebuilding season with a 7-16
record.
Basketball season would
end, and spring sports would
arrive. There were little talks
in the news of a new virus, but
it seemed to be far away from
us. Baseball, track, and tennis
all got their starts.
Baseball would start out
3-5, and the week before the
shut down they would win
a big game against regional
rival ECI. Suddenly, as March
16th approached school would
close for “two weeks,” so we
all thought.
Practices and games were
suspended. The weeks turned
into months and all spring
sports were eventually
cancelled. School sports and
recreation league games all
came to a screeching halt.
Finally, in June, with new
regulations abounding the
sports world started to slowly
come alive. The NBA and
MLB and other sports begin
issuing start dates and how
they might finish the seasons
that were on hold.
Local football teams began
to come for summer practices,
and middle school and high
school softball began talking
about their start dates as well.
Finally, with school starting
back in August, local high
school sports started hitting
the fields and ready for the new
year. The War Eagle softball
team would finish their season
5-12. The football team would
make an exciting run to the
playoffs finishing 4-7.
Cross Country teams had
a wonderful season, even
getting to go to the State Cross
Country Meet. Recreation
league softball and baseball
completed their seasons at the
end of the summer, and they
too were able to take the held
for football and cheerleading.
After the fall sports
completed, the winter sports
followed. Basketball players
have started their season and
continue to press forward.
The break at Christmas
allows all of us sports fans to
look back at a crazy sports year.
It has had its excitements and
its disappointments; however,
that is what sports is all about.
Hopefully 2021 will not bring
cancellations.
My hope for 2021 in the
sports world is last second
buzzer beaters, game winning
held goals, walk off homeruns,
and all the many other exciting
sports moments. Those
moments are much more
exciting than saying, “The
game was cancelled.”
As we enter 2021, be ready
to come out and cheer for
your War Eagles! When the
recreation league starts back
up, get out and support our
youngest athletes.
I hope you have had a Merry
Christmas, and I wish you a
Very Happy New Year that is
to come. Thanks for reading
the Sports Minute each week.

(AP) — Georgia Southern
quarterback Shai Werts kept
his team in suspense until
pregame warmups.
That’s when he started getting
geared up emotionally the way
he normally does on game
days — which teammates
and coaches understood to
mean that their offensive
leader wasn’t going to let his
shoulder injury sideline him
for what was likely his final
game with the Eagles. “It
really energized our team,”
coach Chad Lunsford said.
“The guys fed off that for
sure.”
Werts had three touchdown
runs and threw a 65-yard
scoring pass to help Georgia
Southern beat Louisiana Tech
38-3 in the New Orleans Bowl
on Wednesday. “Going into
the week, I really didn’t know
if I was going to be able to
play,” insisted Werts, who
missed Georgia Southern’s
previous two games. “When
the time came for me to make
a decision, I felt good.”
Werts scored one of his
