Schools Close Ahead Of Covid Jenkins County School officials made the difficult decision Friday to close schools as the next wave of Covid strikes the county once again. In a precautionary measure, Superintendent Tara Cooper and the Board of Education decided to close the public school system for two weeks. “We had two positive cases this week, until today.” Superintendent Cooper explained Friday, once the decision had been made. After officials began contacting absent students, they discovered the need to take a break. “As much as we want to have our students in school, we also have the responsibility of keeping both them and our staff safe. Two weeks will give much needed time for the cases to hopefully decrease in number in the county as well as the school.” Students and staff will return to the classroom on February 1. “We are doing everything we can in the schools to be safe and healthy.” Parents and the community should check the facebook pages of the Board of Education or the Millen News for current information. Bus Involved I n Hit And Run A Jenkins County school bus was involved in an early morning hit and run Friday. There were no injuries. The school bus was attempting to pick up students on Highway 25 south at approximately 7:30 a.m. Friday morning. The bus was stopped with an 8 way warning, 2 flashing stop signs and crossing gate engaged. The 2002 White Ford Ranger pickup, driven by Colin Daniel Bowerbox of Savannah struck the bus in the rear while traveling in the northbound lane of Highway 25. The driver of the bus motioned for Mr. Bowerbox to pull over but he drove away, fleeing the scene instead. Local law enforcement joined in pursuit of Mr. Bowerbox and initated the traffic stop south of Highway 121. It was discovered that Mr. Bowerbox was driving on a suspended license. The defendant was transported to the Jenkins County Jail without incident where he was charged with driving while license suspended and hit and run. “There were eight students on the bus at the time of the accident,” Mr. Talmadge Fries, transportation director of the Jenkins County School System, reported to the Millen News. “All of the students were evaluated by the EMS and then transported via another bus to school. School nurses evaluated the students upon arrival.” Both vehicles sustained minor damage. Mr. Bowerbox also had no injuries to report.
