Page 10 — Wednesday, August 25, 2021 The Millen News Forestry Commission acquires new equipment -Joe Brady Millen News Editor Representatives with the U.S. Forestry Commission stopped by the monthly County Commissioners meeting to show the group a new piece of equipment. The Forestry Commission recently purchased 10 new skid steers using state appropriations and federal grants. Each skid steer comes with a price tag of $95K each but the benefits far outweigh the costs. Each skid steer is used to clear debris on the ground such as limbs and other debris that fall onto roadways and buildings due to storm damage. Frank Sorrells, the For estry Commission Chief of Protection explains, “this is the most useful tool we have. We work closely with the county EMA and in the case of an emergency, one of ten chainsaw crews and a skid steer is deployed to the area to move debris.” Sorrells goes on to explain the commission is also exploring opportunities to use the equipment in the case of wildfire debris.
