Page 2 — Wednesday, August 25, 2021 The Millen News Gardening with Taimadge Wintering your garden As the cooler days of fall start to approach, now is August is passing by and the cooler days the time to begin mulching your existing plants to °f September and October are on the way, take protect them from the cold, (photo contributed) a few minutes to walk around your yard and plan what you want to do or what you want it to become. Make notes and begin the plan to transform it into your personal hideaway. Soon the leaves will be falling for the winter cycle. Now is the time to plan and prepare your garden for the winter, even though it is still hot, cooler weather is on the way. Plan to begin pruning as soon as the leaves fall. The crepe myrtles and roses need to be pruned as soon as the leaves fall. Once trimmed, mulch the plants to help protect the roots from the cold winter temps. A medium wood mulch is great for roses. Also now is the time to give your camellias, one last bit of fertilizer for the winter, since their blooming season is coming soon. DO NOT PRUNE camellias at this time. Now is a good time to mulch the azaleas for the winter, pine straw is recommended and a little fertilizer will help. Trim the hydrangeas, once their leaves have fallen and mulch them to protect the roots. If you need to replace and any shrubbery in your yard, the fall is a good time to do it, since most plants will be dormant and less susceptible to shock. Always remember to mulch the plants to help protect from the cold. Please remember, the fall is a good time to trim and prune your garden of any damaged limbs and an excellent time to plan changes to the garden. Fall is also a good time to place pine straw around your shrubs and to mulch your beds with compost before planting bulbs for the spring.
