Emergency personnel transported him to AUMC. (photo by D. Hearn) -Joe Brady The Millen News Emergency crews responded to a single vehicular accident on Highway 25 last Friday evening. A Hephzibah man, JA Quez Deonte Jackson was traveling north on highway 25 in his black 2013 Toyota Corolla when he lost control. Sheriff Robert Oglesby of the Jenkins County Sheriff’s Office explains, “the driver was negotiating a curve and lost control.” Jackson then traveled across the roadway, striking the guardrail. The vehicle overturned and came to rest on it’s roof. The driver explained to investigators that he had fallen asleep which caused him to lose control. Mr. Jackson was transported via Jenkins County EMS to AUMC. As of press time, no word on Jackson’s condition had been obtained. Bynes appointed pastor of True Born Church Students return this week Students will finally return to school Thursday, Sept. 9, to a modified schedule. In what started off as a “back to normal” school year, COVID once again reared its ugly head and forced school officials to close the Jenkins County Schools for two weeks. “Once we return, we will be restructuring our schedule for the next several weeks with our objective being that we can return to regular instruction in October,” Superintendent Cooper says. Beginning tomorrow. Sept. 9, students with the last names beginning with L-Z will return to class. Students with last names beginning with A-K will attend class on Monday and Tuesday. Thursday and Friday will be L-Z students. Wednesdays will be teacher planning days and no students will report to class. “Our students will continue this schedule through the month of September. October 4-8 is fall break and we have plans to return to normal instruction on Monday, October 11.” Oct. 4 last day for voter registration -Joe Brady Millen News Editor The last day to register for voting in the November 2021 General Election is October 4, 2021. Residents may register to vote at the election superintendent’s office on the first floor of the Jenkins County Courthouse, Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Eligible residents may also register to vote online by visiting https://georgia.gov/register-to-vote. To be eligible to register to vote in Jenkins County, you must be: • A citizen of the United States • A legal resident of Jenkins County • At least 17 Vi years of age to register and 18 years of age to vote. • Not serving a sentence for conviction of a felony involving moral turpitude. • Have not been found mentally incompetent by a judge. After registration, the Secretary of State will send your voter registration or precinct card to your mailing address. Registered voters will need to bring a valid photo id such as a driver’s license, passport or voter identification card to their polling location. The first day of early voting will begin on Tuesday, Oct. 12, since Monday October 11 is a federal holiday. Early voting will continue through October 29. Early voters may report to the Jenkins County Courthouse regardless of your precinct. Married in 1976, the couple have been leaders of the True Bom Church of Christ for al most 45 years. Melvin, a Jenkins County native and 1973 JCHS gradu ate is the son of Valder and Allie Jo Bynes. He and Carlene have four children and four grandchildren, “we are hoping for more grands,” Carlene admits.
