School. Burke County
had to travel to Carver
which is in Atlanta. Carver
took the early first quar
ter lead of 25-7 and never
looked back. They defeat
ed Burke County 46-14.
In another game, not
too far from Millen, the
Swainsboro Tigers took
on Northeast High School
on Friday night. Swains-
boro, part of Class AA,
played a very close game
requiring two overtimes to
pull out the win. The final
score was 12-9. Swains-
boro will now face off
against Fitzgerald in the
state semifinals on Friday
night. Fitzgerald was the
state runner-up last season.
The Metter Tigers, a ri
val of Jenkins County and
a team that is in the same
region as the War Eagles
hosted Turner County in
the quarterfinals on Friday
night. The game was close
exiting the first quarter
as Metter held onto a one
touchdown lead. However,
after the first quarter the
game blew open offensive
ly and Metter took the big
win 60-21. Metter will now
play Brooks County on Fri
day night in Metter. Brooks
County is no stranger to the
semi-finals as they were last
year’s 1A state runner up.
Edmund Burke Academy
(EBA) out of Waynesboro
also took part in the state
playoffs Friday night. As a
private school, EBA com
petes in Georgia Indepen
dent School Association.
EBA had to travel to Terrell
Academy, with the winner
headed to the state cham
pionship. It was Terrell
County who had the up
per hand in this matchup.
They defeated EBA 41-20.
A Sports Update
Soccer Season Ends at
Millen Baptist
The final game of the soccer season took place on No
vember 18th at the Millen Baptist Church Soccer Field.
After a full season off due to Covid, the soccer league
started once again. Games were held twice per week
since September.
The final night of the season featured a full night. It
began by honoring our veterans. A cookout was held,
the National Anthem was played, veterans were in
troduced, and then the game kicked off. The first half
was a normal game featuring the two teams battling
as they did every week. The second half featured the
parents and coaches entering the game. In the end, the
kids begged for more playing time and a shootout on
the field took place. A shootout occurs in soccer when
each team selects players to have a final shot at scoring
a goal. After the game, medals were presented to those
participating this year.

season at Millen Baptist Soccer, (photo by Brad Asbury)
A few parents are celebrating as they score a goal against the kids. The
kids held their own against the adults, and if score were to be kept the kids
probably won! (photo by Brad Asbury)
The Christmas music is blasting
in most every store you walk in
and it is hard not to hear the fa
miliar tune, “It’s the Most Won
derful Time of the Year.” While
Christmas is, in my opinion the
most wonderful holiday of the
year, this time of the year is a
sport’s lovers paradise. College
football is heading into the post
season, the NFL is heading to
wards the last weeks of the sea
son, the NBA is in full force, and
college basketball has begun. In
addition, Major League Baseball
is deep in player contract nego
tiations and owner meetings.
First, the college basketball
season is heating up quickly. The
Georgia Southern Eagles men’s
basketball team have completed
6 games already, starting out
with a record of 4-2. Recently,
they lost a very close contest at
in state rival Georgia Tech by
a score of 61-59. The Georgia
Southern Lady Eagles are also off
to a good start. They are current
ly 5-2 as the season gets started,
and they defeated a power five
conference opponent the Auburn
Tigers 68-66 early in the season.
Major League Baseball is talk
ing about a lockout once again.
A meeting between owners,
general managers, and player
representatives is set to start on
December 1. Baseball fans are
hoping that there is not a lock
out, but the dollar always seems
to make the sports world “go
around.” There are some posi
tives that will come from these
meetings starting this week.
Some of the positives could in
clude some rule changes includ
ing the universal DH in baseball.
While baseball fans are keep
ing an eye out on the poten
tial lockout, fans of the World
Champion Atlanta Braves are
waiting for news on free agent
signings, including All-Star
and MVP Freddie Freeman.
Most believe Freddie will
sign a large contract with the
Braves, but there are other
teams chasing after the su
perstar. By the time you are
reading this article, we should
know a little more on the sign
ing of Freeman and many oth
er potential free agents on the
Braves’ roster. What happens
this week in MLB will have
a big impact on next season.
The Atlanta Falcons, the
NFL team from our state, is
still fighting for a potential
playoff spot. They are keep
ing hopes alive. Currently
they are 5-6 but sit in second
place in the division. With
six games still to be played,
the chance for a playoff spot
is narrowing. There are some
games that could play in their
favor, only time will tell.
Let us not forget the NBA
from our state, the Atlanta
Hawks. The Hawks made a
run in the playoffs last sea
son, coming up one game
short of going to the NBA
championship. Presently, the
Hawks are 11-10 on the sea
son and that is good enough
for 10th place. There is a lot
of season left to be played.
The NBA plays an 82-game
season. However, if the sea
son ended today, the Hawks
would still be in the playoffs.

fessional scene. We will give
