Last Tuesday around noon, emergency crews were dispatched to Highway 25 North and Perkins Green Fork Road to a
singular vehicular accident. Vanessa Morris, 32, of a Hendrix Street address was traveling south on Highway 25 when she
failed to maintain her lane and exited the roadway into the ditch.
Unable to regain control, Morris traveled an additional 313 feet before striking a culvert with the front end of her late
model Chevrolet Malibu. After initial impact, the vehicle became airborne for almost 100 feet before striking the ditch,
overturning for 80 feet before coming to a rest upside down in the ditch, facing north. The victim was transported to Doc
tor’s Hospital in Augusta by Air Evac. There has been no word on her injuries, (photo contributed)

The St. Nicholas Toy Box has made over
160 children very happy this Christmas
season as 6,700 toys were distributed to
needy families across Jenkins County at
the Jimmie Douglas Ag Center, Saturday.
The toy box was started six years ago
by Spring Creek Auction owners Joe
Brady and Sam Eades to give Jenkins and
Burke County children toys on Christmas
morning. “No matter what a family’s
circumstances, every child deserves
a toy at Christmas,” explains Sam.
When the program was created, the toy box
worked in conjunction with the Wimberely
House in Waynesboro. “Last year, after
Wimberely House decided to pull away,
we paired with Project For Better Health,
the Jenkins County Chamber, and The
Millen News. We concentrated entirely
upon Jenkins County,” Sam continues.
“In the past, the toy donations were
supplied entirely by customers of Spring
Creek Auction,” Sam says, “this was the
first year we had collection boxes setup
around the community. We want to thank
MI Metals, ScotBilt, Haley Bullis, James
Joyner, Cindy Linder, Millen Methodist
Church, Millen Baptist, Oak Hill Baptist
and Rev. Jerlyn Hudson with Bethel
AME Millen who distributed coats.
I’m sure we are forgetting somebody.”
Mrs. Debbie Frawley, vice chairperson
of the organization further explains,
“this was the biggest year we have seen
and we look forward to next year!” Just
because this is a wrap on this Christmas
doesn’t mean interested persons can’t still
get involved. If you or your organization
is interested in helping please contact
Spring Creek Auction at 478-401-5007.
“The residents of Jenkins County can
go into this Christmas season confident
in the knowledge they have made all of
these children happy. None of this could
be possible without the generosity of
our neighbors, friends, and loved ones.
May God bless each of you this
Christmas!
City closer to issuing distilled spirits
license
-Joe Brady
Millen News Editor
The City Council is much closer to
issuing distilled spirits licenses. At
the December 7, 2021 City Council
meeting, the Council approved
the City of Millen Alcohol Code
Amendment. Council members in
a unanimous decision will follow
the requirements for licensure as
required by the State of Georgia.
Retail package stores will only be
allowed in Zone B2, which is both
ends of Highway 25 down Winthrope
Avenue to the railroad tracks.
State law limits the distance to 1500
feet from each other or one store every
14 mile and 300 feet from a church.
The newly adopted ordinance
requires that pacakge stores be at
least 1500 square feet with a separate
store entrance. The retail space must
have a separate entrance and can not
be combined inside another store.
The Council will begin accepting
applications for licensure at the end
of January 2022 thru February 20.
The first license will be issued at the
March 2022 City Council meeting.
The yearly fee breakdown is as follows:
Beer and Wine License - $575
Beer and Wine Consumption on
Premises - $300
Distilled Spirits - $1500
Voters overwhelmingly cast their
votes at the November general election
to pass the alcohol ordinance for the
City of Millen. The City stands to
collect substantial excise taxes in
the sale of distilled spirits. The City
collected over $80k last year in beer
and wine taxes. For more information
or to read the amendment, please
