The winter months are upon
us. While I am not a fan of the
winter, I am a sports fan and
there are plenty of sporting
events going on around the na
tion and the local area. Whether
it is football or basketball that
you enjoy, there are plenty of
games to be watched. Here are
some sports highlights from
around our area in the college
and professional ranks.
Fans of the Georgia Bulldogs
are more than excited this week
as the Bulldogs handled busi
ness on New Year’s Eve. From
the opening kickoff until the
last seconds of the game, the
Bulldogs left no doubt that they
were going to win. The game
was a dominant performance
over the Michigan Wolverines
with a final score of 34-13. Next
for the Bulldogs is the much-
anticipated rematch with Ala
bama. After being dominated
in the SEC Championship, the
Bulldogs will look for revenge
against the Crimson Tide. In the
early lines, the Bulldogs are a
three-point favorite.
If you are traveling to the
Georgia vs Alabama game
next Monday, have fun and be
safe. Dress warm, the predicted
temperature is supposed to be a
very wami twenty-five degrees
at game time. Thankfully, the
game is played indoors; there
fore, it will not be too much
of a shock to both players and
fans. For all the Bulldog fans
out there, “Go Dawgs!” For all
the Alabama fans, “Roll Tide.”
If you have no dog in the fight,
enjoy the game!
The Georgia Southern men’s
and women’s basketball teams
have begun their conference
play for the 2021-2022 season.
The men’s team started this past
week dropping both match
ups, one on the road and one
at home. They lost in the first
conference game of the season
to University of Arkansas Little
Rock by a score of 78—66. In
the second game, played on
Saturday, they lost to Arkan
sas State by a score of 74-56.
The men’s team will play one
game this week, they will face
University of Texas Arlington
on Saturday.
The Georgia Southern
women’s team continued their
winning ways this season. In
their only game of the week, the
Lady Eagles defeated Arkan
sas State by a score of 84-75.
The Lady Eagles will have two
conference matchups this week.
On Thursday, they will travel
to Coastal Carolina and on Sat
urday they will face off against
Appalachian State.
With the Atlanta Braves win
ning the World Series and the
Georgia Bulldogs playing in the
National Championship game,
there were high hopes that the
Atlanta Falcons would pull off
the unthinkable and make it to
the NFL playoffs. To accom
plish this, the Falcons played a
must win game on Sunday after
noon against the Buffalo Bills.
If you are a longtime Falcons
fan, the expected happened. The
Falcons lost the game 29-15.
They still have one more game
left in the season; however, the
game will only be to finish the
remainder of the season.
As a lifelong Kentucky
Wildcat fan, I must brag on
their football team. Most often,
Kentucky is a basketball school;
however, on Saturday they won
their fourth straight bowl game.
The only other team to have
done that is the Alabama Crim
son Tide. The win on Saturday
was a come from behind win in
the last 3 minutes of the game.
The final score was 20-17 as
Kentucky defeated the Iowa
Hawkeyes.
Baseball is still on a lockout.
Hopefully in the coming days
we will see some resolve. After
an excellent season of Major
League Baseball in 2021, fans
fear the lockout will continue
into the next year and hinder the
season. My fingers are crossed
hoping this does not happen!
Enjoy the week in sports. It
gets dark early, turn on and
watch some college basketball
as the conference play heats
up and heads us towards the
tournament in March. Or catch
up on football as the NFL is
just over a week away from the
playoffs beginning. You also
have about six more months
left to watch an NBA game.
Without a doubt, most of you
will be glued to the television
Monday night as you watch the
Bulldogs in the National Cham
pionship. Regardless, there is a
lot of sports to watch to get you
through the winter! Take time
and enjoy!
This has been your sports up
date for the week! Have a great
week.

Christmas break is the half
way point of the 2021/2022
Jenkins County Basketball
season. The War Eagles enter
the second half of the season
with a 5-7 overall record, and a
3-2 regional record. Presently,
with several regional games left,
the War Eagles are sitting as the
fourth best team. The Lady War
Eagles has a 4-7 record, and
they have a 2-2 regional record.
The Lady War Eagles regional
record presently has them in 5th
place.
Both teams are in an excellent
position with several games
left to be played. The region
has proved to be very competi
tive and will continue to be so
throughout the remainder of the
season. At the conclusion of the
season, the regional ranking is
used for the regional tourna
ment. The top four finishing
teams in the regional tourna
ment will advance to the Class
A State Playoffs. The Jenkins
County Lady War Eagles will
be looking to finish out strong
this season and earn a second
consecutive opportunity in the
state playoffs. The War Eagles
will be looking to get back to
the State Playoffs after a one-
year absence.
In the past week, the Lady War
Eagles and War Eagles only had
one game and that was against
Treutlen. Both teams came
out victorious. The girls’ team
won big with a final score of
58-28, dominating from the
opening tip to the last pos
session. The boys’ team also
won, but in a closer fashion.
They defeated Treutlen 68-61.
This week, the War Eagles
will face two regional oppo
nents. On Friday night, both
teams will travel to Metter for
a 6:00 PM showdown. The
Metter Lady Tigers are 0-5 to
start the year, while the boys’
team is 3-3. On Saturday,
night the teams return home
to face off against Screven
County. Currently, the
Screven County girls’ team
is ranked first in the region
and have started the first half
of the season with an 8-2
record. The Screven County
boys’ team is ranked second
in the region. They have a 5-4
overall record, with only one
loss in the region and that was
to Portal.
The Lady War Eagle’s game
against Screven County will
tip-off at 6:00 PM at Jenkins
County High School; the
boys game is slated to started
at 7:30, or about 20 minutes
following the girls’ game. Be
sure to show up and cheer
loud for your basketball War
Eagles!
