H1AWASSEE.
Dear Editor: If you will allow
me space in your valuable columns
I will say a few words from Iliawas-
see to let you know that we are
neither dead nor a sleep.
I am glad to say that the Iliawas-
see High School is still increasing.
New students are added to the roll
nearly every day. The teachers of
the H. II. S. are second best to none
in the state, and students who have
had the privilege of being under
their instructions know how to
appreciate the advantages of being
under them.
The people of this mountain
country ought to feel proud of the
educational advantages which they
have. Amid these rough cragid
mountains, and, notwithstanding the
many disadvantages under which
the people have labored, there are
some of as fine educational institu¬
tions established here as can be
found anywhere in the state. Insti¬
tutions where, not only the mind is
cultivated, but where the heart is
cultivated, which is the most impoi-
tant of all.
The time is coming, and now is,
when the mountains will blossom as
the rose, and when the power of the
young men and women will he ft It
m all parts of the South. What is
the cause of the great advancement
that has been made in education in
the last few years? Not hut- a few
years ago the young men and women
of this country had comparatively
no education. Now they me as well
educated as any in the South. To
what is all this advancement due?
It is due the grand institutions of
learning which have been established
in this country.
Let the grand work go on. May
Heaven’s richest benidictions rest on
all these glorious institutions.
Much success to the Gazette.
, “Deo.”

Mr. Editor: We again beg leave
to inform the public of the doings
our town and school through your
paper. We are confident of the fact
that the Ctazktte can be made very
popular i 1 this place by manag¬
ing just'right. smoothly
Everything is going 011
now in and around this place, not-
withstanding that the incesant rains
prevent the farmeis from doing
much toward preparing for the in -
coming planting season, The recent-
raius have given place to that em¬
blem of purity, the beautiful white
snow, and twice within the passed
few days has mother nature sifted
this beautiful down in the air and
to-night as I write this old world,
with all her rough and rugged places,
is one smooth beautiful Scene of
white. Then why should we not l>£
persuaded to consider all the faults
and defects of our fellow nmn
covered up ; and look upon them as
ive now do this old earth without
detecting any spot or blemish
thereon.
The business capacity of our town
is increasing. Mr. John Wellborn
has gotten in a fine stock of goods,
and we already recognize in him the
vraits of a first class salesman. We
are very much struck with the skill
he displays in the arrangement of
his sample goods and to pass. along
by and glance in at them through
the glass front reminds one of a real
town store.
We also are informed that Messrs
Slaton & Hamilton are going to Oit , t
a large new store building right
away, and also a large livery stable.
The latter will be quite necessary
addition to our town and I, for
can’t see why some one has not done
so before now, and why don’t some
man, who has money to invest in a
profitable way, build a hotel at this
place. It could not fail to pay for
after school is out and the attidcnls
[ gone homo, this place, with its
titul mountain scenery, its pure
water and healthful climate, could be
made quite a desirable summer resort
for the weary and wornout business
men of the large cities of the middle
and lower parts of Georgia, who
have a short holiday in the summer
and who generally seek to gain rest
and refreshment for both mind and
body hv a trip to the mountains.
Judge C. J. Wellborn has also
recently located in cur town, We
gladly welcome him into our midst
and as we behold the vennble form
of this veteran knight of the legal
profession, and listen to his words of
wisdom, we are constrained to be¬
lieve that we are “Rising up, Rising
up.”
The school at this place bids fair I
to meet the long felt want of North
East Georgia of a means by which j
she may prepare her boys and girls |
for the exigencies of life without
sending them away from home and
that at an expense of from two to
three hundred dollars a year, which
is more than many of them can
afford to pay, while this school brings
them the necessary education right
to their home, with the surprisingly
low cost of only ninety dollars a|
vear for a hoarding pupil and in
aldition to all this, the religious in-
p uellw , and moral training that en-
t ,j rc | es one here makes it a desirable 1
