Among the Loggers. Few persons who are not in the’ habit of being xsme way actually engaged ia the lumber business] have any adequate idea of the mag- ’ nitride of the industry, and none: who have not been with the loggers in the great pine woods of lho' nartlnvest, an 1 also seen the actu- j al hauling, “■driving,” and sawing! ot the logs, can realize the wonder-! i ful picluresquenoss of a traffic which, as the scientists tell us, is rapidly changing the faceot nature and the very climate of our coun try. The men who do the “logging"’ are a race of giants. More than al most any other, their work calls for a giant’s strength And for al most superhuman powers of endur ance. They are not long lived. The exposures and hardships of the call ing are enough to break down the hardiest constitution, Ttnd lhetem tation to dissipation after a winter iti ermp are as strong as those that assail the sailor after a long cruise. Winter is the time for the camp work, for only over the snow can the great logs, perhaps half a ton in weight, be easily dragged from where they fall to the waterway down which they are to be floated to the mill, on the spring freshets. The northern winter is severe enough, the cold being often twen ty degrees or more below zero, but it is in the spring that the greatest perils and hardships are encoun tered. riien, the great logs having been drawn by hcrses ®r oxen, or in same places over rude railroads, from the neighborhood of the camp to the “banking-ground,” on the banks of the stream which is to car ry them to the mill, tho “drive” begins, and this is the hardest of the work. The sun lias not yet loosened the bands with which the frost tied up the water, and the logs as well, and dynamite is often used to break them. A confused mass of logs and floating ice is started down the stream, and the men follow' it, watching closely for jams and direlects, and for days to gether, with very little rest, guide, force, and control the floating mass. A jam is often perilous in the ex treme, and the promptest action is necessary te prevent delays, for if the pressure of the whole drive comes upon a gorge, it is Hercu lean work to break the combina tion. So in freezing cold water waist deep, or clambering over the logs themselves in mid-stream, the log gers wrestle with obstructions, tak ing their lives in their hands heur ]y. For five or six weeks they trav el thus, with no camp, n© change of clothing, and as little in the way <>f luggage as possible. Stiff and • ore from over-exertion and the terrible soaking in ice- water, they sleep in their blankets on the ground at night, with only the com fort of a rousin g boil-fire between them and the slep from which is no waking. It is sometimes almost impossible tor oae of them to rouse the others in the morning; but the driv-e is on, and there is no rest for them until lhe “boom” is reached, into which their logs are delivered, Notice to Contractors —(reorstta, Bank# County. The curious Bibles is a general name given certain editions of the Bible, whi:h are prized by biblio maniacs, not for any intrinsic val ue, but because they centain cer tain odd misprints ©r mistransla tions. Foremost among them is the Breeches Bible, so called because in the third chapter of Genesis it speaks of Adam and Eve as having “made themselves breeches” of fig leaves. This edition first appear ed in 1500, in quarto form, and we ©we it to the English reformers ex iled at Geneva. During the reign of Queen Elizabeth it served as the regular family Bible, its populari ty being largely due to the Calvin istic comments that liberally be sprinkled the margin. The Bug Bi ble. which appeared in London in 1551, and was originally known as Matthew’s Bible, is indebted for its curious sobriquet to the fact that the fifth verse of the ninety-first Psalm is translated, “So lliou shalt not need to be afraid for any buggs by night.” The original idea-ofthe word—a goblin or spook—is still to be traced in bogie, bugbear, bug aboo. As an alterative, Ayer’s Sarsaparilla, after a trial of nearly half a century, is universally conceded to he tho best ever discovered. It is agreeable to tho taste, and, being highly concentrated, only small doses are needed. An old lady of eighty, Mrs. Mary C. Ames, of Itoekport, Me., after forty years of suffering from a humor in the hlooil, manifesting itself in Erysipelas and oth er distressing eruptions on the skin, at last began tho use yf Ayer’s Sarsaparilla, and, after taking tfm bottles, she is now, sine says, “as smooth and fair as ever.” Frank .Tones, 952 Eighth ave., New York, writes : I suffered from impuri ty of the blood, which showed itself in troublesome eruptions and mattery pimples on my face, neck, etc. Ayer’s Sarsaparilla effected a complete cure. I had previously tried many reputed blood-purilioi-S without benefit.” * Ayer’s Sarsaparilla, Prepared by Dr. .T. 0- Ayer & C'o., T.owell, Mass, bold by all Druggists, i’ricc $1; six bottles, sj.
