Mr. Tom Cobb Jackson seems to be getting his name in tire papers again. The A lania Constitution contains a long account of him. If tho people of Georgia would vote a stated salary for the legisla ture, as other states have done, they would do more in a much shorter time than they do. If the legislature would OHCour age the railroads instead ©f trying t-> "ripple and kill tirern ou‘, Geor gia would prefly soon show up in a luoro prosperous way and the state would present a perfect net work of railways.—[Eagle. The state ©i Alabama has done the right thing. Bhe has enacted anew law. “tVh.en a murder is brought to justice, and pleads the ins imiy dodge, he is then tried un der a special empanelled jury for insanity. If he is found sane, then he is tried for murder.” This is com ing under the march of civilization. The courts ot Alabama will be no longer hoodwinked under the in sanity dodge. Tiro pro so co dng allormy and many t f the citizens of Appling county signed tiro pet it ion. A Gratuitous Insult. The aelion of the house of repre sentatives yesterday, with regard to the cotnmillve to investigate the claim of the lessees of the Western and Atlantic railroad, in instruct ing said committee how they should take testimony, is tire most remarkable c induct we have ever heard of Irorn a legislative body lo wan! the aelion of a committee. It is clearly and emphatically an insult to tli© committee. This com mittee was appointed to take testi mony, and report. The house thinks the committee is so weak they may be imposed upon and deceived, and hence they throw safeguards around it. If die senate agrees to the resol ution, no decent man ought to re main on the committee, and we don’t believe they will. Nothing is clearer than tint we have men in the legislature who are not willing even to trust them selves on a proper settlement of the question involved in this mat ter. It is very easy to account for demagogue? who will some to the surface on an issue like the Olive bill, and who will, as a certain mem her, who made a demagogical ti rade, and when called to account by one of his friends, said; ‘*o,l don’t believe what I said, but it suits my constituents.” i3ut this isabusiness matter in which trie state is interested, and it is the part of statesmanship to solve it proper ly, and if the committee is so weak that it needs the guardianship of the house to watch and protect its proceedings, it should never have been appointed. ['here is a fact that has come to our knowledge lately with regard to the claim these lessees have against the state, which we deem it our duty to give to the public. It comes trom Tennessee, and not from ijie lessees. It is this; Under he lease act the state road was to be exempt from taxes. The sta e of Tennessee has assessed and col lected one hundred and fifty thou sand dollars of taxes. This matter, from the first, was brought to the attention of the legislature of Geor gia, and no action Ims been taken in tho matter. In the meantime; the taxes being assessed under the Tennessee law against the state ot Georgia's property, the fi fas, have been, for a long time, paid and transferred to Tomlinson Fort of Chattanooga, as trustee for the les sees. These fi' fas., we presume, will be all levied on this property when the lease expires, aim this will bring the whole- matter of the difference into the Tennessee courts lor settlement. We simply desire to put oarselv es on record now, and for all lime to come, that we prefer to have the Georgia h ; ;-laturo to pass on tL . settlement rather than tq'l av: a.
