The King of Cranks. A gentleman wi h long hair and finger nails called on us last even ing. He took a good deal if mu time iml in rolurn left with ns not only an odor which still hovers ov er about its, bu' some ideas which, if we do not crowd them out of us* will, we fear, make us take to let - Img our hair and linger tails and impoverishment, grov, too. He sud he was in Washington 1 toking op authority for the story that a me hod has been devised for pho tographing the human soul after it. has leit ihe body. He told us that he was very much interested in this new device, for if it proves lo be practical he intends to apply an improvement by means of which 3lie souls may be ensnared. “Nou see,” said he, “‘if die sou! can be photographed, it must be a concrete substance, of course it is }Ots b'e to devise a means of cap turing and resfraing it. I think the world will one day awake to find that I have contrived such a device, and, while I d@ not profess to be able to prevent death, I believe it will be possible to work out some plan for renewing life. Now sup pose, lorexample. iUi old man dies. Of course it is only his body that is dead. The body is worn out and refuses to perform its functions, but the soul is as fresh and young as ever; the soul is eternal. Now, don’t you see it I can contrive a means of catching the soul and get ting it inlo a bottle, for instance, it would be very simple then to put it. into some dead child’s body and renew the child’s ]ile.” ‘•But would Ihe child be the same child with an old man’s soul m it?” was asked. “No,” ho replied, “the soul, which is ihe life, would Lie the old map's. The new person would really be the old man, but lie would be a chiid again.” “You know,” continued the vis itor, “that one of the great. argu ments in favor of a belief in a fu ture existence is that the entire human family wishes for such an eternal existence. Well, the same argument holds good here. Every old man wishes that he might be a boy again. This wish has been sung and sighed since the begin aing of tho world, and it was this •‘act tha-t first led me to believe that nature had provided some means by which youth might be renewed if a man would only ii ad if. lam not sure, of course, but I think I have found tha: means, provided this device for photo graphing the soul is a success.” “That would make life eternal in this world, would it not?” we asked. “Yes, it might. Then there is another view to take ot it. Nature sometimes makes mistakes. Men n re deformed, tor instance. Why, look at is. Suppose we take 100 of the very best souls obtainable—male and female—and put them into 100 of the best bodies to be found! Don’t you see at. a glance that perfection would be (lie result?” “What would you do with ihe lost souls—morrally lost, you know?” “Let them go their way, There would always be a surplus of souls and I would save only the best. When a lew criminal with a bad soul and a good, healthy body died, I would lot the soul go and save lhe body. Thon, when some per son with a pure soul and a weak or deformed body died, I would save the soul and let the body decay. I would save only the best of each and then by experiment, I would find out whit kind of soul was best suited for a certain kind of body, and when I had made complete harmony between soul and body —well, may be I'm too sanguine ot success, but if I do succeed, ihere’s your millennium, ain't it?” We assured our caller that it he succeeds he will not only haves, made every man his own millen nium,-but wi'l have a scheme, the financial aspects of which would awaken in us a hearty and sincere desire to go snooks with him till his patent expired.—j" Washington Tost.
