The Jkn in Koem One.
Il was a lintel in Manistee,
one of U'oso badly planned houses
■where the sounds from the bar
room and office reverberatethrmigh
the upper floors. Tho hour was past
midnight and a party sitting in
the office were listening to tho cx
paiicuces told by a loud spoken
guest. ’1 life electric bell sounded a
call bom room Mo. 1. The porter
went lip to see about it and was
spoken to as follows: “Cive tlie
compliments •f tho man in room
No. 1 to the gentleman speaking
below. Kept awake by the sound
of the gentleman's voice, this man
requests him to talk down cellar
instead of upstairs.”
The reporter tailed to render the
message as politely a* it was given
him, and of course the talking was
kept up with more energy than ev
er.
After awhile a bare legged figure
in a fiannel night robe appeared
upon the stairway, and, speaking
in a voice rich with entreaty, said:
‘•Fellow citizens, permit, me to in
troduce to this meeting the Man in
Room No. 1. He is not as much oi
a man as he thought lie was when
lie saw room No. 1 put down op
posite his name. [Applause.]
Then he believed himself to be
some pumkins, and the landlord an
intelligent and discerning person.
[Hisses.] He now feels himself to
be a bodly wrapped tly and the
landlord a diabolical spider. [Re
newed applause.] When lie walk
ed up te the desk and registered a
siren song worded like this rang in
liis ears:
“ ‘Will you walk into room I,’
Said ths lamfiord to the guest,
‘Kept for an honored one?
Therein you’ll sweetly rest.’ ”
Cries of “Good!'’ ‘‘Give us more!”
etc.
“Roam One.” the man went on,
“is down fr a call at T o'clock;
wherefore [‘Oh! Oh!] I rise [mani
festations] t© remark that my hon
orable triend, the distinguished
gentleman who last addressed you
[Rats!’J, is an orator of force, and
the Man in Roem One yields to
him. The voice of the honorable
gentleman, as it is heard on this
floor, may be soft and persuasive;
blit as heard in Room- One, it is a
trumpet attuned to waken the
landlani'g most honored guest.
[Derisive laughter,] Rom One,
fellow citizens, is at Ilia head of
this imposing styirway, ascending
l’rom this magnificent office, to
which the adjacen. dining hall, fhs
palatial bar room and the reverber
ant billiard saloon act as sounding
boirds. [A. voice: ‘He's in iha
s >up,’ and laughter.]
‘ Some of you may place faith in
the superstitian about the number
thirteen. Such might regard an as ■
sigainent to room 13 as a presssg®
of bad 'uck. [Acquiscenca.] As
a choice between them avoid room
1 as the uuluckiest of the tw®,
[Sensation.] I might say more,
gentlemen, but you perceive the
situation, and the hour is, ah—late.
[‘Go on, go on.’] Permit me t® re
tire to the repose ef private lire,
and yield a measure of your sym
pathy to Ike Man in Room One.”
