Spinoinff a Missis.-ippi Xarn. A stcrv is told of a traveler on a very slow train who asked the con ductor what the trouble was, when the engine gave a citizen or more sharp toots with the whistle, ami was informed that the • was a cow on tbs track, ami whan shortly af tertha rchistle sounded for a sta tion the weary traveler said: U I wonder if w liSve caught up with that cow again.” This is a very old yarn and has always sounded like a fable. Jack Richardson, h mov er, tells a story which seems iike a libel on the great Father of Waters /.nd which also implicates some bovines. J\lr. Richardson, who was formerly a Chicago newspaper man, but is now a full Hedged edit or and proprietor of a daily paper in Wichita, Kan., paid Chicago a visit, and in recounterng some re miniscences told of a trip he made down the Mississippi during the low water. .Jack says that they had considerable trouble all the way down, but when near La Oresie the climax was reached. The - time was necessarily very slow', but the greatest delay was earned by cows. Every mile or two the slew'p;ogress'of the boat had to be stopped entirely, while the deck hands rolled up their pants, waded out and drove a herd ot cattle trom the channel so that the ste?mer could get by. Jack did not use to tell such stories before lie went to Kansas, but he told this and never blushed.— [Chicago Herald. The Ilorss Swam Eight Miles. A horse belonging to a ferryman was on the beat at Irvine and was in the act of drinking when he plunged forward from some cause and fall into the wafer up to his nese. With remarkable instinct he turned roun 1 and swam to the boat, and made several efforts to crawl back into it, bu! it only serv ed to push it further away. By this time he had drifted be'ow the fer ry, and he then made efforts to get out upon either bank. In this he also failed, as the banks were too steep. He then turned aside and swam down the middle of the river. The ferryman, Mr. White, made vain efforts to rescue his horse, and, watching him until he wjs out. ©t sight, give up all hopes of ever seeing him again. Next morning the passengers on the Irvine stage were amused at the manner in which the ferryman was fondly ca ressing his horse which had just ar rived, and later the passengers learned that the steamboat from Ford had picked up the swimming animal eighl miles below. When dragged upon the boat he sank down, foo completely exhausted to stand. When this became known fhe sympathizing passengers join ed with Mr. White iu his exuber ance over the recovery of his noble steed.—[Richmond Register. Quaint Old Marriage Notices. Caught a Monster ftharlc. Ed. Roberts and J. Hutra, two fishermen, caught a busking shark Sunday night. They w ere about four or five miles from the shore and had 200 feet of net out. The shark ran in o the net and got tan gled. Fighting furiously to get free, this ii*h only wrapped himself tighter in the folds of tbe net. The fisherman let him alone until he drowned himself, and with The as sistance ot seven boats pulled him into the bay and to where lie now lies near the wharf. The net was damaged to the extent of S2O, but the men sold the shark to Perez brothers, so that they lost nothing by it. These basking sharks are not man eaters and are not all dang erous. The one captured is be tween thirty and thirty-five feet long, and weighs two tons. As the liver of this species is about one third of the whole fish, the amount of oil that can be tried out ot its liver will be between 100 and 150 galioß.s.—[Santa Cruz Surl. Mrs. Robert Stephens, who lias just returned from Eddyville, tells us that the hair upon the head @f Mr. W. P. Emerson, which has for years been gray, is now turning black. It is ilaimed that no dye has been used to produce theeffec', but that it is a freak ol nature. Mr. Emerson removed to Eddy villa from this city about a year ago, and when li® left here his head was nearly white.
