Tho writer lias b*cn in the state only a short while, but he is bettor posted in its climate, lo calities and resources than some whoh ive lived within its bounds a life time. Tho Death ot Jefferson Dav’s— President of the Confederacy, - Jeffersen Davis died in New Orleans Friday morning, 12/30 o'clock. During Thurs day it wa3 thought by his physi- cians that he was inn proving, but a relapse taken place, and dur ing a severe coughing spell, at 12:30 he quietly passed away at the ripe old age of $1 years. Mr, Davis was the first and enly president of the South. During the late war he was the foremost hero et the Confedera cy. GslUntly he stood by her and bravely he bore her defeat. Ail&r the different states se ceded to the union of the federal government, and took the oath of allegiance, Mr, Davis, with that proud and haughty spirit of southern sire—carried down from ancestry, would rather die, than suciumb against what he ■bettered To-be fight r ad for the cause, Lad stained southern soil with southern blood, and mark ed her broad plains with ihe graves of southern heroes. He was right. Never did i thought enter this southern hero that he must betray his people, after they had spilt their lite blood. Thus he lost his citizenship and died an allien to lhe unien— having never cast a vole since before the war. Mr. Davis was horn ia Chris tian county, Ivy. His father was a large planter, Jeff. Davis is more. Though the people’s sins he bore; While the south, his loss mourns, He has gone higher to receive a crown. Yet the pages ol history mart maik his tomb — He was a hero, brave and true— For tie south, and for her cause, Ho led her color* a* ho was. some thought him mean.—others a fool. But neither wa* he—he was Cool. While he may not have seen as they did, Yet, he did not put himself before the north for a bid. Abe Lincoln offered hia one, Bat he sever accepted on Any terms —not even for a day— A southerner he was, and fought for the gray. Lav the Knight to rest, Whom the south cherished. The purest motalic casket, give him for his bed— The finest granite marble for hi* head. The Killing of Peltus. It now turns ont that' Mrs. Southworth, who killed Pettus in New York a few days ago, was no 4 such an ang*l after all. She had bet on horse racing, chartered excursions, dressed in mens’ clothing and weal to mas querade balls. Sho is now a full-fledged murderess clamor- ing for " Woman’s RighU.” Can* you set? , The lamented Ben. Hill, ono of Georgia's -Lining statesmen*; safd at one lime on lire stump,-; “Me and Mis, ilili - ed to have nolhitfg to do vvitK politics, but rise to the einineuco? of the L'ut we talked tme niatteriMrer, and Mrs. dill con :luled I must take the stump. I like petticoat government- I believe it is lha best govern ment under the sun!” Right? here there was something lack ing in Mr. Hill. Had ho beea. an eye-witness to the as: ajsina tion of Pettus, lie would havo thought different. There he would have seen the serpent’s eye piercing in all its rag# and madness of sin, in the dark eyes o! thodashing young widow as she tiredfive shots into fh* dying Pettus, as he reeled fo and fro on the great and thronged street of New York. Had he been aa eye-witness when the serpent slipped around Adam and got next to Eve, perhaps he would have thought different. ’Tis strange how Mr. Hill’s big mind concealed these things.- Per haps he went en the line that woman had redeemed herself when she bore desist; but Em bore a greater burden than b 8 mother, when He died on th cross to intercede and redeem a lost world. Whatever may ba the sym pathy of a New York jury in Mrs. Soufhworfh’s case, the erime is murder/ lhe Supremity can sea if in no other light; the werld must frown upon it. If Airs. South worth is freed, she is a murderess at liberty; if she goes fo a prison cell, she is a murderes*; it the hangs, she is a murderess. With all thaf, only a woman, dealt with as a wo man, suffering for a woman’s crime. Rettus’ remains were emtered last week at his homo ia Chatta nooga, Tens., amid the tear3 of leving relatives and friends. He was one of New York’s fin est busineis men. Telegraphic. Atlanta, Ga. Dec. 5.—A few of the iaitiatodones collected last night at a resort within fifty miles of At lanta to witness a prize fight. The contestants were Beddy Flyna and Billy Cummings, ef Memphis. Both men are lightweights, and each has won considerable reputa- tion as a fighter. Cummings rushed the fighting in the first two rounds and appar* sally had Flynn at his marey. In the third round, however, Flynp lauded heavily on Cumming’* neck and brought him to the ground.' After the lapse of ton seconds tha refeiee called time, and as Cum mings was arable to come to tha scratch the fight was awarded to Flynn.
