The amount now reaches something over $33,000. The balance will be subscribed next week. The completion of the road is a set tled fact without a doubt. We had the pleasure in com pany with Mr. VY. S. Mize, of trying Mr. Jeff. Hood’s fine horse a short distance, while in Har mony Grove last week. The big fellow moves a buggy. With some training he will shotv his pride. Again, after an elapse of sturdy winter, the jovial dram mer made his appearance TV eTuesday morning—three in a bunch. The boys have a dis like for a place where they are not toasted and dined on roast beef, fried chicken, ham and eggs. In consequence of this, they “lit out” before twelve. Homer is not used to “sich.” It would bankrupt her. Ilut we don’t blame the drummer. II we had an abdomen like some, we would fill it if he we had to do like Davy Crockett—fill it with hay. The “yaller” bear made his appearance at the court house Tuesday evening. At first we thought lie was hunting a law yer to plead his case. But af ter his iirensy master seated himself on the curbing and tooted Ids horn, our opinion was changed. The citizens, the school children and their teacher flocked to the scene. Had Gabriel Mowed Ids trump et he couldn’t have summoned a more surprised and awe stricken crowd. Why the old folks came from timir winter’s retreat. There lay bruin on his native earth, stretched out, his-yaller” wool bushy with time and travel. The old fel low was evidently tired, iiis nigger feet showed they had carried Bruin many a mile— perhaps he had sailed the “bid ny deep” from South America to Italy and back, lie had seen Ins master's native country. But. life was not all over, ne had come to Homer. The deni zens had turned loose every thing to welcome Bruin and in tokens of his appreciation for their presence, at the com mand of lus master’s gibberish tongue lie danced and gave an occasional grunt, nis side waltzing was immense. We thought of that Carnesville ring-tailed coon. If he had been there to waltz with Bru in! Thus limner has been greet, ed with a bear; the little girl and the little boy have given him their last nickel, and per haps some of the old ones too! Commu.aic -litl Weekly. [By Rev. T. O. goiuE.] The trees were loaded with icicles and the ground was eov ered with snow Saturday morn ing. Rough as the morning was I road 9 miles to Midway to preach to 22 persons. 3of the No. were ladies, Mrs. Geo. Har ris, who is always there, her sister, Miss Vann Morris, and I Miss Mattie Davis. Preached and held church conference. C. M. Sigers and his wife joined the church by letter. ‘‘Uncle Newt.” and I went to dinner with Boon Sud | deth. A saw is much needed right here, Mrs. Newton Suddeth was sick, as so was also George’s .vile. If they had not been dek there would have been two more ladies at church. 1 spent Saturday night with Mi s. S. A. Pettyjohn. She and her daughter are as nice house keepers as I ever saw. Her husband has been dead nine years. She keeps out of debt and makes a good living. There are Hundreds of men who are not half so good farmers vs this woman. A lady told me the other day that she counted the streams from Blairsville to Jel -ferson, a distance of sixty-five miles and there urelTO of them. We had a neat little emigre gallon at Midway Sunday. The -ermon wis “about like com mon” as “Uncle Newt.” would ay. Ranage, Rev. T. U. Priekett. Several more dollars were fais :d on'.be organ. Bio. A. W. Henderson is bard at work. He started the thing right by giving $lO himself. Miss fiatlie Mullikin is one of ;he purest and prettiest girls in the coun'ry. She lirevv Her album on the table before me with the request to write in it. It seemed that all my witts left me that minute, but I fine ly recovered sufficiently to write, “Single blessedness is better than wedded misery.” 1 spent a pleasant night with th g nice family Sunday night. Mrs. Mubikin is very unwell. “Uncle Newt.” didn’t forget “Sister llorie and the chil dren.” He believes, a preach er needs money in March as well as November. Made a pleasant call at Dr. Wilchel's Monday. Miss Louie Eberhart is com ing to Homer in a few days to get up a class in painting. Bon.e of her paintings are beau liftih Miss Ilulsy died of fever at Midway last week. Mrs. L. A. Muliinax paid the preacher on this round. Took dinner Monday with Mrs. M; ry Ellison at Maysviile. I knew better than to undertake t<> talk to a dozen women at once Jas. Lyle and Tom Ash oi Maysviile, have been sick, but are something better.
