Keep on lending your neigh bor tiiis paper. lie must have the news. Our mineral springs must be nicely fixed up and the hotels painted, ready for the crowds m the summer. ’Squire Evans gave this of (ice a social call Monday. Mr. Evans is very po jular with the people of Banks. A gentleman told me that he took several papers, hut reads the Journal more than all the rest. Read Brook's notice in (his issue. Also take a look at his advertisement in another col umn. The bachelor sale was a fail ure. We could find no one who would 6tand for them long enough to cry them oil. There are houses and lots in Homer- that can be bought cheaply, and there is no better place on earlh to live. NOTICE:—I will sell hats and shoes at cost on the 19th. This oiFer is for one day only. W. W. BROOKS, Homer, Ga. Mr. Andy Mackie, an old and respected citizen of Banks, died at his home near New Sa lem, two weeks ago. Rev. J. D. Gunnels is report ed to have preached a good ser mon at New Salem last Sun day. Bro. Kinsy of the Bap -tist church, preached at night. We will take chickens and eggs in payment for this pa per. We will do your job-work neatly at this office. There are three or four men in Banks fixing to run for sher iff. There are whisperings in the air. Some of these fellows are on a still hunt. Am glad to learn from our esteemed correspondent at Bei lin that, that fair city is getting' on so well, I did not know that the academy was within the corporate limits of the city. I have engiged several nice girls to write for this paper. A good deal that you read in this paper is written by fair fingers. Let everyone who feels an in terest in their section taka their county paper. On my way from Harmony Grove last week, I found shelt er from the storm in the home of Geo. T. Campbell. Ihe wind blew down his fence and sever al trees in the community. Mr. I Campbell says lie has been tak j ing our paper since its first I issue. • I got off to Maysville again the other day. I blundered into Corners store and two or three of them hollowed at me at once. A clever set can’t be found in the state. These Com ers have befriended me forty times /‘Jenlcs” Comer says ir I were their preacher, tiny would buy me a horse. lie don’t like Jumbo’s looks. lie is judging by the outward ap pearance, you see. I can get wheat bran from the Comer's cheaper than I can get it any where else on earth. Our Bro. Madden was out again. W. C. J. Garrison is still sick. Maty letters are received by the P. P. P. Cos. from patients, saying they had used such aud stub blood puriser and sarsipaiifia**. n cu’ion iug their names and (tiling they did do good, and they cid not get well until r. Homer had quite a sensation Sunday in the shape of a negro fight. Bill Faulkner, Lou Faulk ner and Bill Gobcr were the eoons that took a hand. It seems that bad blood had been boiling in these negroes for months, and the pent up forces broke their bounds Sunday. The following facts were brought out in the trial Mon day, before W. F. Ilill: Will Faulkner pushed Will Gober and cut at him, whereupon Gober threw a rock at Faulk ner. Then Faulkner cut Go her across the face and Gober shot at Faulkner twice with a pistol he had on his person. The case of Lou Faulkner was dismissed. But Will Faulk ner was committed to jail on a charge of an assault with in tent to murder. Will Gober was committed for assault and battery, but gave bond, which was fixed at SSO. I am told that a number of the negro boys around here are carrying pistols, and it is high time that a stop was being put to it. A Trip to Midway and Back. I go towards Midway with out any mental resignation. I got there in good time Satur day morning, and found the host congregation we've had there on Saturday this year. I went to dinner with Rev. T. C- Prickettfwho is one of the best kind of men. Called in the af ternoon at the beautiful home. ! of F. G. Odell. By sun down I was lodging at C, O. Chand ler’s. The old gentleman was in a fine humor. There is a little town around Chandler’s mills composed of some fifteen families, j Had a house full at Midway Sunday. People came in from I i miles around. One nice young !couple I noticed had rode fif j teen miles that morning to get ito church. Ate dinner with my good ! friend C. W. Meadows. Mr. Meadows is one of the finest workmen in this cnunlry. He beats any one on a watch, I have ever tried, and then, he charges less than anybody else. A, W. Henderson support*d the preacher and Bro. Turner the missionary cause. Gillsville was well represent ed at Midway Sunday. We will have a communica tion now every week from Gills ville. There will soon be about two dozen young ladies and young men together at work on the Journal. J. E. Hitch lias a large school at Berlin. Comm iinica. led. Mr. Editor:—l see in vour last issue of the Journal a state ment which I wish to correct. In your regular way of de scribing Berlin and other things you have failed to give the merits we justly derserve. I think you should have made it fuller or modified some things you did say. We think there are as good people in Berlin district as in the county. Our place has all you say it has; it also lias an academy, at which we have Snbbath-school, Literary school, large debating club, and also a city of the dead. Were we to lake in a circumference that it talers to constitute these little hamlets all over this country, we would have a good population. So if you can’t give us justice in your paper, say nothing aoout us. Dr. Hayden is the first man I have seen sow his sweet po tatoes broad cast. Silver Shoals Items,—Our Sunday-school met last Sunday at the Griffin school house. ’Twas organized with a good number on the roll. We are glad it has come to life again- Mr. William Jones i3 superin tendent. One of our young men went to see his girl last Sunday and lost his saddle. He seems to be much bothered about it and says if his saddle isn’t brought up pretty soon, he is going to pull all the hair out of some body’s head. We are in sym pathy with him. Mr. 01 ie Cook, one of our handsome young men. seems to be carried off with the girls of Silver Shoals. Dr. Duckett of Hollingsworth, is visiting Silver Shoals’ girls often. llis elegant turnout was standing at the gate of Mr. any one was sick. Mr. Jimmie Prickett seems to be quite a ladies’ man. We dm.’; blame the girls for loving Jimmie—no doubt he loves them in return. We learn that Mr. Billie Bol ing is seeking another house keeper or heart keeper, or something of the kind Chet r up, ye maids and widows, (here is yet hope. Mack Furr was out sparking Sunday. lie seems to be get ting in earnest of late days. i clevrstpliic. Washington, April 13. As the faint rays of morning light peered through she window of the unassuming lan se upon Capi ol Hill and li: poi the form of the stricken .-datesuian, the body turned, a irr.'.y gleam of morning light illuminated the vet handsome but emaciat ed face, and in that ray the li;-s of Samuel J. Randall wentoni. He had made a noblo an l heroic fight for life, but when death came in that ray of dawn, lie went off ns in sleep. 'lhen to the world came the announcement, *‘*11:11 Randall is dead.” Ihe people grieve.—As Hie day op* ued and the people ap peared upon the streets, they were met with the sad intei!- gence that the soul of t ie gre; t democratic commoner had loos ed its mantle of earth, and pass ed lo the great hereafter. A spiiit of gloom and sadness ov erspread the city, and over the masses of people who later wended their way churchward, there was a lack of brightness and buoyancy. Indeed, all Washington has been in tears. No man has ever serve t in the halls of congress more beloved. In all the churches prayers went up for his stricken fami ly. In his death the democratic party loses its greatest leader, the South its truest friend, and the country one of its greatest men. He died a Christian.—“Mr. Randall died a Christian,” said Postmaster Gen. Wanamakvr, who was at his bedside when life expired. -He was baptis ed three months ago, and Ins conversion was in no sense a death-bed conversion. Indeed, lie worked out his salvation as methodically as he would have worked out au appropriation, bill, and he gave the reason for his faith in the same clear, log ical manner that he would have given lii3 reasons for his belief in a line of public policy.” Chattanooga, Tenn., April 13. —Elmer, the eleven year oil son of acting railroad agent T. A. Seif at Moss Run, was in - sfantly killed this afternoon at Lloder’s siding, near Midway. The hoy was swinging to the side of a running train, and los ing his balance fell to the track. Ten cars passed over his body. Belair, Mil., April 13.—State Treasurer A;cher has executed a trust deed for ihe benefit ot iris b >nd-men. The deed cov ers all his property in Cecil and Hartford counties. Esti mated value below $50,00). Treasurer Archer is now under arrest for malfeasance in office.
