Are Pastors Especially Guilty?
F. H. T ALLANT.
1 entered a plea of not guilty in behalf
of the pastors of the Ilightowdr Associa
tion, You will find the things of which
they are charged in Bro Hawkins’ first
article. Also in iny reply of April 23.
That Bro Hawkins hath rather dodged
the issue by citing us to scriptural pioof,
relative to the responsibility and duty of
pastois, shepherd or overseers, seems ap
parent in his last article,
When I entered a plea of not guilty,
Bro Hawkins, it becomes YOUR duty to
point out as I humbly asked you to do
■wherein they ARE guilty.
But instead of pointing out wherein
the pastors are to blame you reaffirm
jour charge and then say: “To the law
and tcsti'potiy.” Now, my dear brother.
I will go with you to the law and testi
mony. You cite Acts 20:28. Take heed
therefore unto yourselves and to all the
Hock, etc, Col. 4:17. Take heed to the
ministry which thou hast received of the
Lord. This is the pastor’s duty and if
he does these things he is blameless is he
not? Now point out where our pastors
fail to take heed to themselves or the
ministry which they have.received. Point
it out, give an outline.
Next, my brother, you ask whether
God holds responsible his oversee:s or
the people overseed? And you ask us to
turn to Jer. 10:20-21 and to 12 :ro-u and
to 23; 1-2. Why you wish to go back
over 500 years before the gospel dispen
sation to talk about the pastors I can t
understand. But if thou goeth to Jere
miah 1 go with thee. And let us take tin*
whole book. Is not the very first utter
ances of the prophet against all the cities
of 'udah? Does he not all the way
through point out the national corrupt
ness of the PEOPLE? Did the inhabi
tants not suffer for their OWN sins and
tranegressions ? on surely don’t wish
to liken our pastors to those in the days
of Jeremiah? Turn to the 31st Chapter
of Jetemiah, “Behold the days come
saith the Lord that I will make a NEW
covenant, etc.
New covenant, promises; “l will put
my law in their inward parts and writeit
in their hearts.” Is this promise to the
pastors only or to all the true Israel of
God under the new dispensa'ion.’
But even in the days of Jeremiah the
“tench member” was responsible for
himself
You next refer us
the angel of the church of Ephasus write”
Brother Hawkins says ; “He don’t say
write to the members of the church, but
to the pastors.”
There is so much contained in your
assertion I am at a loss to know how to
discuss it. My dear brother, the very
idea of your believing for a moment that
our dear crucified, buried and risen Sav
ior directed John to write those letters to
th? pastors almost shocks me, But let us
consider it addressed to the pastors, for
ihe sake of argument only. If those let
ters were written to the pastors, then the
pastors ALONE are responsible for the
several things enumerated in those three
chapters. Let’s notice some things
enumerated :
“Thou has TRIED them which say
they are apostles.” Now, brother Hawk
ins. did the PASTORS TRY those'apos
tles? Or did the whole church? If this
letter was addressed to the pastors then
surely the pastors ALONE sat in judg
ment.
This would be diverting were it not so
serious, [Who ever thought before 11bnit
those Baptist pastors setting alone in
judgment?] “Thou hast found them liars"
says this letter.' Yes, the pastors faitli
fuiiv tried the case and found some who
claimed to be RpOStICB liars,'did they
No! No! ! No! ! ! The pastors never
done no such thing.
Those letters were not written to the
pastors but to the CHURCHES, to the
members composing those seven church
es, including the “bench members.
Now, my brother, take your seat by
me. Let’s look at the first three chapters
of Revelations. The first chapter, 4th
verse reads: “John to the seven churches
which are in Asia.” Now who was this
address to, the pastor or the church?
In verse il we find John addressed as
follows: “What thou seest write in a
hook and send it unto the seven churches
which are in Asia.” Was John not coin
manded to write to the CHURCHES?
Churches then as now were composed of
men and women, boys and girls, elders
and deacons, were they not? If so 'the
“bench members” were addressed,
were they not?
In chapter 2, verse 7, we find the foj
lowing: “He that hath an ear let him
hear what the spirit saith unto the
CHURCHES.” The spirit talking
those letters to the CHURCHES.
Now this is repeated six times. Thus
we have introduced nine witnesses to
prove our position that those letters were
written to the churches. That I may not
be misunderstood I will state my posi
tion more fully. The instructions and
reproofs Christ gave to the seven church
es in Asia, respecting discipline, doctrine
or duty, were not addressed to pastors,
elders, deacons, overseers, shepherds or
bishops, of the seven churches, but to the
members of each church, through their
ministers, thus -ecognizing THEM (THE
CHURCHES) as invested with the SU
PREME judicial and disciplinary power,
Ani He teaches them also that they are,
as CHURCHES, directly responsible to
HIM, and that he will inflict punishment
for disobedience (on THEM the church
es[ blot out their organizations.
So I must enter a plea of not guilty on
behalf of those seven pastors of Asia.
Those letters were not written to them
but sent by them to the churches.
Now, brother Hawkins, you un
dertaken to prove the pastors guilty by
referring us to the second chapter of
Revelations But let us see what it does
prove. It proves the reverse, for Jesus
in revealsng the secrets or things that
must shortly come to pass never places
one particle of blame on the pastors of
those churches. Unless indeed you con
sider those pastors as the church,
If those pastors had not been faithful
He surely would have told his beloved
disciple-' about it.
We must consider then that ‘hose an
gels, those messengers, those pastotPswho
should carry these letters to those
churches were BLAMELESS. And yet
brother 11. we find those churches in
what we might cad a pretty bad fix. The
church at Ephasus left her first love, At
Pergamos some seems to have held to the
doctrine of Balaam. At Lhyatira they
were taught and seduced by Jezebel. Sar
dis was not found perfect in works. And
so with all the churches there were faults
found. But the fault, whatever it be,
were nowhere charged to the pastors. If
so I failed to see it. Point it out.
It has become so common to blame
preachers and ESPECIALLY pastors,
| that 1 have become a IDtie bit inclined to
investigate a charge belore I accept it as
very weighty, I try at least to consider
i them a- the law considers every human
being, as being innocent till their guilt is
proven.
So l shall contend that our pastors are
not ESPEIALLX guilty for the LAG in
missions or the INDEBTEDNESS for
those th it are on the eld, or for the
chmahes following the lust of the eye or
How To
Gain Flesh
Persons have been known to
gain a pound a day by taking an
ounce of Scott’s Emulsion. It
is strange, but it often happens.
Somehow the ounce produces
the pound; it seems to start
the digestive machinery going
properly, so that the patient is
able to digest and absorb his
ordinary food which he could
not do before, and that is the
way the gain is made.
A certain amount of flesh is
necessary for health; if you
have not got it you can get it j

You want of the food you need
Kodol will digest it.
You need & sufficient amount of
good wholesome food and more than
this you need to fully digest it.
Else you can’t gain strength, nor
can you strengthen your stomach if
It is weak.
You must eat in order to live and
maintain strength.
You must not diet, because the
body requires that you eat a suffic
ient amount of food regularly.
But this food must be digested,
and it must be digested thoroughly.
When the stomach can’t do it,
you must take something that will
help the stomach.
The proper way to do is to eat
what you want, and let Kodol di
gest the food.
Nothing else can do this. When
the stomach is ** It needs help;
you must he.„ - 9 giving it rest,
and Kodol win ao that.

This is indeed a good Oroacl plea of in

guilt is proven.
Did you ever try to collect money for
your pastor? .If so. didn’t someone howl
“short crops,” another one plead “low
prices,” another say “high places, ’ etc.
just as though the pastor was to blame.
Now a word to the pastors and breth
ren : Let every individual bear his own
blame. Let us bear each others burdens.
Let us consider that we are co-laborers,
If we are joint heirs of the promise we
are jointly responsible for the care of our
Father’s affairs. If we call no man Rabbi
on earth we have no right to shuffle the
responsibility on no man. Search the
Scriptures; find out your duty and per
form it. The truth never loses by an

privately it will be kept p-ivately.

In Loving Memory
of Lizzie Woodall, who departed this life
March 22, 1909. She was. before her
marriage, the daughter of J II Mullinax,
She was 35 years old and leaves a hus
band and a father, two brothers and one
sister to mourn her death. She joined
the church about seventeen years ago
and lived a Christian life until ! 'er death,
and we feel sure Lizzie is at rest where
she will want nothing nor need nothing,
but is in happiness with her Lord. It is
very sad to part with our loved one, but
we feel sure that she is at rest, but the
one who doeth all things best saw fit to
call her to a better home, a home not
made with hands
She is now sleeping with Jesus, and
weep not for Lizzie, for we know she is
in a better world. It was hard to give
her up. but it was all for the best. She
has left a vacant place in her home, but
has filled one in heaven. Lizzie will
never come back to us. but we can go to
her, and 'vith blessed, holy Lord we can
shout and sing with one accord
Asleep in Jesus, Messed sleep.
Which none never wake to weep.
