Are They Guilty?
F. H. TALLANT.
Ladies and gentlemen and fellow citi
zens and brethren in the bounds of the
Hightower, and to all whom it may con
cern, whether of the household of faith
or of the household Satan.
I ask you to bear with me a little in
what may seem to be folly; indeed I ask
you to bear with me.
We shall know as we are known, and
not being known or recognized myself I
am determined to know no man after the
flesh in this communication.
But, however, nevertheless, notwith
standing, if you will take ihe North
Georgian of last week and take your seat
with your face to the north and spread
page first before you in map form, then
look to the northjeast corner of said page
you will find what DEPONENT seyeth
concerning fidelity pastorilas.
Most all of said section lieth due east
of an interesting communication from
Harris Grove. You will find as you ex
plore said section or tract some very ir
reguiar features as respects the surface
formation. It hath also an underground
substance specially adapted to the growth
of the sinner, unregenerate, disbeliever
and critic in general.
So far as said section or tract can be
applied as an exhortation to good works
it is very, VERY commendable. But it
seemeth that deponent doth put blame
upon the pastorilas entotalis.
First it doth appear that ‘-pastors have
something to do besides ride around and
eat chicken.” I wonder what it is? Do
you suppose it means to walk around and
eat ducks?
I wonder has it ne;vejr occiipred to no
preacher who is not a pastor that there
were nothing to do but imitate the pas
tors in this ONE unforbidden example.
Is not the servant who actually labors
worthy of his hire? But he that laboreth
not neither shall he eat, and of course it
might be considered as a trespass for
those who labor not in the vineyard to
eat evn tha chicken? (For the chicken
cheweth not the cud.)
It is also intimated in said plat, second
section, that pastors “just let everything
pass that will pass.” I would like to
know who made the pastor prosecuting
attorney, or gave him the right to in
vestigate causes or try cases. E' en Paul
never din more than humbly exhort the
church at Corinth to action. Do our
pastors not exhort the chuiches to duty?
In section third, as touching fidelity
ministerialis we shall notice the divorce
laws. Look, sayeth deponent, at our di
vorce laws and the number of divorce
cases before our courts. Our pastors
handle all things too lightly! Sakes
alive ! I declare lam having a time on
this pastor business.
But it doth ocsur to me that however
willing our pastors may bs to help make
the laws of our country they have but
very little to do with state or national
legislation. No the wickedest man in
the county can readily inform you that
he cannot vote for a preacher because he
already has a higher office than MAN
can give him. And he speaketh wisely,
too. So our pastors don’t make the law,
neither do they act as attorney general.
We further notice that per-ons get di
vorce for sundry things and are remar
ried by our pastors and just set them up
up in adultury !
This subject was not introduced into
your pages by me but it is here and lt
me for a moment notice it with respect
to justice to the pastors, We might say
thac a couple thus set up are freed from
the further sin of fornication, but we will
not say that: no, but we do say that a
marriage certificate issued by a magis
trate of our state and addressed to the
Justice of the Peace, Notary Public or
ordained minister of the gospel, or others
whose duty it be to join in wedlock, are
not guilty of any crime if they perform
such marriages.
And ESPECIALLY I say the pastors
®li£ Wflrtl) #corgkit.
are not. Titus 3:1 “Be subject to mag
istrates.” Yes the pastois must be sub
ject to magistrates and the magistrate
hath issued the license and directed it to
him if it be presented to him. But surely
there is not a pastor who would perform
such marriage if he knew it. But he is
no priest to cleanse or offer sacrifice for
the past, present or future sins of the
contracting parties. Neither is he com
manded by the magistrate to test the vir
ginity sterility or divinity of the con
tracting parties. Neither is the pastors
required to ascertain the race, color or
previous condition of servitude of the
contracting parties, Neither is he re
quired to become sponsor for the parties
or their offspring. The magistrate sim
ply commands and the pastor obeys, and
in obeying the magistrate he obeys the
gospel.
Here is a dark and strange thing in
deed. That a man, a minister, can in the
•ace of all gospel commands and in diso
bedience to the simple, plain command
of jesus in Matthew 18 tell and publish
a thing to the world instead of telling i‘
to the CHURCH.
If a pastor is in fault tell it to the
CHURCH. If some is living in adultery
tell it to the CHURCH. Not to the
churches. Not to the world, the hypo
crites nor the nevil. But tell his or her
faults to the CHURCH of which they
are a member.
In Matthew nor nowhere else are we
commanded to bring charges against
members except before the tribunal
which is to sit in judgment.
But did one apostle withstand another
to their face? Very well, but where is
the apostle wUo withstood another to his
back? It is no trouble in this country
to find where a person belongs to the
church at. Then tell it to the CHURCH
There is no prosecuting officer in the
church, but it is EVERY member’s duty
to put the church on notice if any one
should walk disorderly. This being his
duty he is forbid to publish such cases to
the world either on individuals, church
or churches.
We have seen much of this done, how
ever. Once in a while we see “bench
members” become peevish and pettish
and blame the pastor for their own dys
pepsia disposition. Deacons, too, some
times become bossy and chronic growlers
and the preacher killer always sees the
church decaying and "rawing worse and
throws his little mite of influence against
the pastor and will actually move his
church letter if the Lord don’t do mira
cles abundantly along the line of his pet
scheme.
The preacher killer may be either eld
er, deacon or layman. It don’t matter
which class he belongs to, he always has
a pet scheme, a hobby. You m y pull
him off his hobby nine times and ten
times he mounts no wiser nor sadder.
Like the ostrich, if you only chase him
you soon discover he curves to the left
and a gradual but sure curve brings him
back to his hobby. And like the ostrich
when flight fails him he covers his head
with sand, leaving his beautiful plumags
evposed to public gaze.
Yes, lam having a time of it But I
have faith for it doth occur to my mind
that the fellows who begin talking about
the pastors generally comes out about
like Pat did.
One day Pat’s house caught afire, and
in the excitement he put on his trousers
hind side in front and front side behind,
and then jumped out of the second story
window. Friends rushed in and picked
him up, asking: Are you hurt, Pat?
Pat looked down at his trousers and
exclaimed: No begorra; I’m not hurt
but I’m fatally twisted.
So when a fellow begins to make
charges against pastors, publically, they
generally get fatally twisted,
Let me say to all, carry your charges
to the CHURCH and lay your sins at
the feet of Jesus.

The virtues grow about the home
they cluster, bloom and shed their
perfume around the fireside. Love,
husband, wife, father, mother, child
and home —without those words
the world would be a barren wil
derness, and men and women but
brutish beasts. The home is the
nursery for the virtues.
We are inclined to think that
heaven will be given to those who
are trying to make a heaven on
this earth.
