Whether you handle a pick or pen, a wheelbarrow or a set of books, dig ditches or edit a paper, ring an auction bell or write funny things, you must work, don’t be afraid of killing yourself with work. Work gives an appetite for meals, gives the appreciation of a holiday There are young men who do not work, but the world is not proud of them. It does not even know their names ; it simply speaks of them as old so and so’s boys. The great busy world does not even know that they are here. So find out what you want to do and do it ; take off your coat and make a dust in the world- The busier you are the less deviltry you will get nto, the sweeter will be your sleep ana better satisfied will the world be with you. For a wife, take the daughter of a good mother. The man who stops his paper because he is a “little short” and keeps right on smoking “fifteen cent or two-for-a-quarter” cigars lays himself open to the suspicion of being “off.” The man who dou’t want to take the paper be cause he is taking too many now, hadn’t ought to feel aggrieved when said paper forgets to maka any spacial mention of his fine horses which sold for a big price, or fails to reprint the complimen tary notice a paper in some other city makes of him not knowing how poor a friend he is to the printer. The man who sticks a card in his show window offering his stock and the business for sale and makes no mention of his offer in the paper, ought to take it, no matter how low it is. He is too fai behind his time to make busi ness go in these years. These facts are like the United States Trea surer’s reparts, “respectfully sub mitted.” Ex. Looking One’s Best. The printers have deviled thee on Saturday night for wages when thou hadst not one cent to th\ name. Men have taken the papn without paying for it and curse’ thee for not getting out better Thou hast been called a dead be;n by passenger conductors when thov hast shown thy aunual pass to en vious gaze. All this thou has* borne in silence. Thou canst no come in here.’ And he fired him. “Heaven is bis home; and besides, if we let him come ia here he will continually dun delinquent sub scribers for our habitation is full of them, and thus create disorder in my kingdom. Start your children right by see ing that they attend school f'om the beginning to the end of the term. You owe them a good ed ucation and they can get it if you see that they are in school. You will never have a friend if you must have one without a fault. A Kind Word. A kind word costs but little, but it may bless all day the one to whom it is spoken. Nay, have not kind words been spoken to you which have lived in your heart through years, and borne fruit of joy and hope? Let us speak kindly to one another. We havs burdens and worries, but let us not. therefore, rasp and irritate those near us, thoss we love, those whom Christ would have hs save. Speak kindly in the morning; it lightens the cares of the day, aud makes the household and all its affairs move along smoothly. Speak kindly at night, for it may be before dawn some loved one may finish hiß or her space of life for this world, and it will be too late to ask for giveness.
