HANDLE SOI BEAMS
Used in Production of Oil, Feed
Cake and Other Products.
LARGE DEMAND FOR PRODUCT
Inexperienced Growers Should Inform
Themselves as to Proper Methods
of Cultivation and "There
by Avoid Losses.
(From the United States Department of
Agriculture.)
For the information of farmers who
are beginning to sow soy beans for
grain rather than for hay and who are
unfamiliar with the handling of the
plants under the former conditions,
the United States department of ag
riculture will shortly publish a farm
ers’ bulletin, “Harvesting Soy Beans
! for Seed.” The demand for these seeds
( for use in the production of oil, feed
[ cake, and other bean products Is rap
idly increasing and the farmers of the
United States are preparing to meet
this demand.
The character of growth, the uni
form maturing habits, and the heavy
seed yields of the soy beans, says the
Typical Soy Bean Plant.
bulletin, contribute to the eAse of har
vesting and recommend the plants for
seed production. The many disadvan
tages which attend the harvesting of
cowpeas for seed are not common to
the soy bean. When grown for grain
alone the shattering of the pods of the
soy bean is a serious fault and inex
perienced growers are likely to sus
tain a heavy loss of seed through
lack of knowledge and improper han
dling of the soy bean plant. The shat
tering varies witli (lie varieties of the
bean. It is well, however, with most
varieties to give special attention us
maturity approaches to prevent serious
losses from this cause.
Time of Harvesting.
In general, the best time to harvest,
except where special bean harvesters
are used, is when about three-fourths
of the leaves have fallen and most of
Hie pods have turned color. If cut at
an earlier stage, the plants are diffi
cult to cure properly, and the yield
will lie lessened materially on account
of the immature grain. On the other
hand, if the plants are allowed to be
come too ripe, the pods will shatter be
fore being cut, and much seed will be
lost. When special harvesters are
used to gather the seed, the plants
must reach full maturity to obtain the
best results.
Methods of Harvesting.
Various methods of harvesting the
ENORMOUS COST OF HAULING
By Reason of Slight Improvement to
Public Roads, Cost of Hauling
Placed at 23 Cents.
The public roads throughout the
country, which constitute the primary
means of transportation for all agri
cultural products, for many millions of
tons of forest, mine and manufactured
products, and which for a large per
centage of farmers are the only ave
nues of transportation leading from
the point of production to flic point of
consumption or rail shipment, have
been improved to only a slight extent.
By reason of tills fact, the prevail
ing cost of hauling over these roads Is
about 23 cents per ton per mile.
More that 350,000,000 tons are
hauled over tlipse roads each year, and
the average haul is about eight miles,
from which It can readily he seen that
our annual bill for hauling over the
public roads is nearly $650,000,000.
The cost per ton-mile for hauling on
hard-surfaced roads should not exceed
J.3 cents. It is therefore evident that
THE NORTH GEORGIAN, GUMMING, GEORGIA
crop arc in use In different sections
where the soy bean Is grown largely
for seed production. The crop may be
cut with ordinary mowing machines,
self-rake reapers, self-binders, or even
with scythes, corn knives or sickles.
The beans also may lie harvested with
a special bean harvester which gathers
the grain from the standing plants.
When the plants are cut before ma
turity, they are cured in shocks and
allowed to remain in the field until a
convenient time for threshing. If thor
oughly dry they may be housed and
threshed Inter.
Threshing.
Threshing may be done with an ordi
nary grain separator, blit if tills ma
chine is used it must be altered some
what to prevent the cracking of the
beans. In some cases a speciul set of
thin concaves is used for threshing
beans and In other instances some of
the concaves are removed. Good judg
ment on tlie part of the threslierman
will enable him to adjust the ordinary
separator so that the beans limy b€
threshed with little splitting. Special
pea and bean separators are on the
market, and their use may be advisable
when large acreages of Hie beans are
to be handled. If thoroughly dry, so.v
beans can be threshed with a flail. If
only a small acreage is to he threshed
—an acre or so —this method is prac
tical and economical. In a few sec
tions a ccffn shredder has been used
to ndvnntage in threshing beans. If
properly cured aniLdrled out, the beans
shell out very readily with such a ma
chine.
The straw obtained from threshing
soy beans for seed is a valuable feed
for all kinds of stock. In many sec
tions tlie straw is baled at the time of
threshing and sold to liverymen, dairy
men and stock feeders.
Storage of Seed.
As soy-bean seed spoils rather easily
if not properly handled, care should h*
exercised In curing and storing. After
the beans are threshed they should he
watched carefully to avoid heating and
molding. When thoroughly dry, there
is no such danger. The best plan, per
haps, is to spread tlie seeds out on a
floor immediately after threshing and
shovel them over from time to time un
til they are thoroughly dry. After this
they may be safely put into sacks or
bins. The storeroom should be dry
and with a free circulation of air. Soy
bean seed loses its viability rather rap
idly, and it is not safe to hold seed for
planting purposes more than two sea
sons. The seeds of tlie soy bean, un
like those of tlie cowpen, are rarely
attacked by weevils or other grain in
sects.

Japan’s Financial Aid to Russia.
A domestic loan of $50,000,000 has
been arranged by Japan for Russia,
a large part of. which will be used to
pay for war supplies already ordered
by Russia in Japan. At present,
$35,000,000 Russian treasury bills held
in Japan on September 25
and were renewed. The bankers of
Japan have so many demands for
money made upon them at present to
finance new enterprises that they are
not disposed to underwrite Russian
loans; therefore the government will
issue exchequer bonds which may be
paid for with Russian treasury bills.—
