THE LAST EXAMINATION
OF WAR’S DRAFT
Many a man has fallen down because a
teat of his water showed unmistakably
that he had kidney disease.
The kidneys are the scavengers and
they work day and night in separating
the poisons from the blood. Tlieir signals
of distress are easily recognized and In
clude such symptoms ns backache, de
pressions, drowsiness, Irritability, head
aches, dizziness, rheumatic twinges,
dropsy, gout.
"The very best way to restore the
kidneys to their normal state of health
and cure such symptoms,” says Dr.
Pierce of Invalids’ Hotel. Buffalo, N. Y.,
"is to drink plenty of water and obtain
from your favorite pharmacy a 60-cent
bottle of An-u-rlc, double strength,
which Is dispensed by almost every drug

NEED OF BETTER HIGHWAYS
Ohio Farmers Convinced That Im

Promise Financial Aid.
At a recent convention of the Ohio
Good Roads association the farmer
delegates spoke with the utmost con
viction of the need of improved roads,
good 305 days In the year, if they were
to do their part in the mobilization of
tlie resources of the country in the
cause of humanity. Moreover, these
delegates from the farms did not ask
to have the roads Improved for them;
they promised their full proportion of
financial support for their construction.

of railway traffic makes the highways
of great value in delivering manufac
tured materials from one city to an
other ; the motor truck has suddenly
become a real necessity in meeting the
urgent requirements for transporting
the products of the cities. In short,
the rational improvement of roads is
an essential element of the grave eco
nomic problems of the day, to make the
valuable products of the farm and shop
available to the user at the lowest pos

This subject should be studied at

as the provision of railway and water

of manufacturing facilities.

ROAD SYSTEMS IN NEW YORK
Total Designated Mileage Placed at
11,932 Miles—Wcrk Hindered by
Scarcity of Labor.
The total designated mileage of
state and county highway systems in
New York state at the present time Is
11,988, of which 5.920 miles had been
completed and accepted on January 1,
while contracts in force at that time
covered 1,185 miles. This with the
contracts awarded during the year
1916, leaves a balance of designated
mileage not yet cared for of 4,210.
Highway construction during the past
two years has been gravely hindered
because of the fact that surplus labor
has been largely absorbed in munition
making and other abnormal Industrial
activities. In New York state dnring
1910 it was Impossible to secure even
at largely increased cost, more than a
quarter of rhe labor actually required
for highway work.
ASPHALT IN UNIVERSAL USE
First Pavement of Any Importance
Was Laid in Washington in 1876
—Wearing Qualities.
The use of asphalt in paving con
struction has become so universal that
one never thinks of it as a compara
tively recently developed material. Yet
probably the first sheet of asphalt
pavement of any importance was that
laid in Washington, D. C., on Pennsyl
vania avenue in 1870 and on Vermont
avenue in 1870. The latter is still in
existence today, and it is an evi
dence of the weurlng qualities of
this type of pavement even when laid,
ns it was, without the scientific meth
ods of the present day.

Love Found the Way.
The spirited story of one of the most
romantic weddings of the war was un
folded recently, writes a British cor
respondent. Lieutenant Wyndhnm was
gassed in Frunce, and taken to Lady
Inchcape’s hospital. There he fell In
love with Lord Incheape’s daughter,
but the girl’s father refused his con
sent to their marriage. The couple
ran awny to London, only to find Lord
Inchcape in hot pursuit, and that
Wyndham was wanted for being ab
sent without leave. There followed a
chase through London ,in the course
of which the couple got into telephone
booths and changed their clothes, and
then walked out under the very noses
of the detectives who were waiting
for them. They then made their es
cape to Scotland, where they were
married.
