PERSONAL OPLMION.
(By Mercer Williams.)
Or it might be ca'led sell o
pinion. Means simply the opin
ion we hold of ourselv s, or it
might be called an estimate of
ourselves; or in othei words, to
use plain language, sand ’ or per
sonal opinion is as we ,e: our
selves.
Opinions Differ: As all fac
es are not alike; as all featur
es are not the same and all peo
pie are not alike in their ways
and habits, so it is reasonable
to suppose that we arc not all
alike in our opinions. Not on
ly do opinions differ in kind
and number but they differ in
their nature, as each opinion,
whether it be self, public, or
any other kind of opinion has
a particular nature of its own.
In view of this fact, however,
we see that self opinion has a
particular nature of its own
that differs, or more properly
changes its position as circum
stances, condition, or occasion
demand.
A Good Opinion-; It is in
deed important that we form
a good opinion of ourselves as
reason and possibility will jer
mit, but when opinion goes be
yond the bounds of reason it
becomes an pxtreme.
If we conceive and cultivate
the idea that we are no good
for nothing, we will come to
the place where we won’t ev
en make an effort, simply be
cause we think there is no pos
sibility whatever for our suc
cess, while at the same time it
is also true that if we con
ceive and cultivate the idea
that we are to good for any
thing, our opiniaon becmes an
extreme that gives rise t "an un
settled condition in life and,
sad to say the harTOst of such
a conception generally always
results in failure or defeat.
Be Medium: It is said there
is a medium to all extremes,
hence it is to our greatest in
terest that we be medium in all
things, and especially our opin
ions.
Medium ground is the best
ground on which to stand, for
extremes are very often decep
tive in their dealings and firm
ness of construction.
And again it might be well
to add that is not only the best
ground on which to stand,but
also furnishes the best and the
surest basis on which to form
our opinions.
Hence if we think •ourselves
better than we are we become
extremists, while at the same
time, if we think ourselves as
good for nothing we become
extremists.
But, it is good to know that
there is a medium on which we
can stand that makes us free,
are out of reach of either the
influence of either extreme.
Hence it is to our interest that
we avoid extremes w'hen think
ing of ourselves, and be medi
um in all things.
Weighing Ourselves: The im
portance of weighing ourselv
es vshould by no means be ig
nored. Truly itm ay be said
that many times the scales of
our opinion denote too great a
weight, while it is also true at
times they do not denote
enough. Asa proof of this
statement many over-estimate
themselves, while others under
estimate or do not give them
selves justice.
We should by all means be
careful when we go to weigh
ourselves, being sure that we
position ourselves properly on
the scales, making the proper
allowanaces, considering our
faults, and reviewing our life
from every standpoint.
Someone says, how then
shall 1 think of myself, or
how may 1 kow my real wei
ght and proper standard? The
answer to such a question only
comes in the simplest words,
with a sudden response. Think
of yourself as you really are,
weigh yourself on the proper
balance, measure your life by
the way you live it..
And, at the same time, let us
acquaint ourselves with the
fact that we are all far from
perfection, and in the presence
of this great truth, evidently,
there is something good as bad
bout each of us. My friend, if I
you have an idea that you
weigh too much, or not enough I
übtract your faults and imper
l'< cl ions from your perfections
and you will see how much
you weigh.
(MAT) R. F. D. 1.
Well, it is still rainy weather
and not much farming going
on yet, but the Lord knows His
business better than we do.
borne people will say that the
Lord has nothing to do with
ihe rain, the storms, the light
ning and the thunder, but the
Bible tells us that He has His
way in the whirlwind and the
storm. Someone will say I
would like to have some proof
on this before I will believe it,
well lets see what the Bible
says about it. Job, 28-26 when
He made a decree for the rain
and a way for the lightning of
the thunder: 27-then did He
see it and declare it: He pre
pared it, yea, and searched it
out: 28-and unto man He said,
behold the fear of the Lord
that is wisdom, and to depart
from evil is understanding. 2
Samuel 22-14: the Lord thund
ered from heaven and the most
high uttered His voice. 15: and
He sent out arrows and scatter
ed them, lightning and discom
fited them. The word rain is
mentioned about 81 times in
the Bible. Balms, 68-9, thou
O, God, didst send a plentiful
rain, whereby thou didst con
firm thine inheritance when it
was weary. 105-32, He gave
them hail for rain and flaiming
fire in their land. 135-7, He
causeth the vapours to ascend
from the ends of*the earth: He
maketh lightning for the rain:
He bringeth the wind out of its
treasuries. Matthew, 5-45,
that ye may'be the children of
your Father which is in heaven
for He maketh His sun to rise
on the evil and on the good,
and sendeth rain on the just
and on the unjust. Revelations
10-6, These have power to
shut heaven that it rain not in
in the days of their prophecy,
and have power over waters
to turn them to blood, and to
smite the earth with all plagues
as often as they will. Now
this seems to me that this is
enough Bible quotations, e
nough to satisfy any body that
believes that the Bible is the
true word of God, but it seems
that there are some, who don’t
believe that it is true. Well,
you know what unbelief will
do for a man. It will cause him
to go to hell when he leaves
this world.
The Bible also tells us that
the clouds is the dust of the
Almighty’s feet. The Lord is
all powerful. Now, all good &
perfect gifts come down from,
ab’ove, so let’s believe what
God’s word tells us.
Well, the writer attended
services at Antioch the second
Saturday and Sunday and he
beard two mighty good ser
mons on the subject of church
preached Rev. J. W. Gill.
Bro. Gill is anew preacher in
this country but he is an old
time preacher, preaching noly
the Bible as he finds it, and
that is the kind of preaching I
like to hear, and the only kind
that will save a lost woidd. The
great trouble with a lot of peo
ple to day is that the ywant to
have their own way, and the
good Lord will let them go
their own way here, but will
have is way in eternity. We
must remember that the Lords
way is as much Above our way
as the heavens is above earth.
So we had beter accept the
Lord’s way whether it suits us
or not, for we will all have to
stand before Him one day and
answer to Him for the way we
have believed. As your faith is
so be it unto you. Let us remem
ber that the Lord knows His
children and will give them e
ternal life, but those that re
fuse His way they will receive
eternal death. Which one do
you want? It is left to us to
make our own choice. I trust
we all will choose the Lord’s
way, and be saved at the last
day. As ever,
J. W. Thomas.
