WESTERN & ATLANTIC.
Georgia Agitated, as to the Dis
position of the b ‘State” Road.
Atlanta, Ga., July 14.—What,
will be done with £the Western &
Atlantic railroad at the expiration
of the present lease is now the sub
ject of much discussion here, par
ticularly by members of the legis
lature. The present legislature will
have to decide this matter as the
lease expires next year. Under the
original lease act the lessees were
required to be bonatide residents of
state, but. nearly all of the lease
shares are now owned by the Louis
ville and Nashville railroad. Sen
ator Brow.i, one of the few surviv
ing niemhers of the combination '
that leased the property is presi
dent of the board, but owns only a !
fraction of one share. The lessees |
claim about $1,000,000 betterments
but tlr.e claim does not seem to meet
with much favor with the members
of the. general assembly and there
appears to be a strong sentiment
against allowing the lessees any
thing for betterments. Should
they be allowed, the Louisville &
Nashville will get them.
E. B. Stahlman, third vice-presi
dent of the Louisville & Nashville,
has his head-quarters at the Kim
ball for the purpose of seeing what
can be done.
IL I. Kimball, one of the original
lessees, but who has sold his share,
is also here representing the inter
est of E. W. Cole, of Nashville.
Several prominent state politi
cians are also hanging about the
hotels willing to lend Stahlman a
helping hand if he desires their
services.
It is said that Senator Brown,
who will get only a small portion
of the betterments, if allowed by
the legislature, has refused to as
sist Stahlman and has advised Bol
ton to bring suit for the amount in
dispute; this Stahlman does not
feel inclined to do. He has done
nothing yet, 'out will determine
ppon some plan of action early next
week. He is reported to have said
that he will do nothing until he
can accurately determine the feel
ing of the general assembly in this
matter.
It is currently reported on the
streets that if the road is again
leased a strong company will be
among the bidders, Composed of
Senator Brown and several promi
nent convict lessees of the state,
who will use their convicts whenev
er their labor can be placed to ad
vantage. The popular feeling
among the members seem to favor
a lease and let the property out to
the very best bid that can be se
cured. The question of selling the
property has been abandoned and
the general talk now is in favor of
a lease. When the property is put
on the market it is believed that
the most prominent bidders will be
the Louisville <fc Nashville railroad
and West Point Terminal company.

PRACTICAL PREACHING.
“Thou Shalt Not Covet Thy
Neighbor's Maid Servant."
At a recent meeting of the Charles
ton Ministerial Union, composed of
the protestant pastors of this city,
a resolution was adopted invoking
the aid of the pulpit throughout
the city and state, in putting down
the deeds of violence which have so
often disgraced our land. The oc
casion of the protesant resolution
was the failure of the jury to con
vict Dr. McDow of the murder of
Capt. Dawson. The pulpit began
work to-day.
Dr. Thompson's text today* was
“Fools make a Mockery of Sin."
In illustrating how men mock at
sin he said : “When they refer to
their darkest deeds, their flagrant
p ofanation of the marriage row,!
their utter disregard for the truth,
their devilishly devised ami obsti
nately prosecuted schemes for the
undoing of chastity—as infirmities
or indiscretions—men make a mock
of sin, when their silence seems to
give it sanction. But it may be
asked," said Dr. Thompson, “Why
press this matter now? Why not
now, rather than at any other time
when the indications are that the
catalogue of those dreadful deeds
may be lengthened at any moment.
In heaven’s name, have we not had
enough of them? Shall we voice
lessly wait until some other citizen
with gaping wounds lies cold and
dead—perhaps yourself, your hus
band, or your brother. If we may
not speak now, at what number of
victims will you assign as the limit
to the patience and forbearance of
our people?
“A man’s house, you say, is his
castle. His maid servant by the
law of the tenth commandment, is,
for all obligations of defense, his.
Now who, self-confessedly, was the
first invader of house, castle, home?
And such an. invasion—for a pur
pose so base. What the moral and
what should be the legal deserts of
such an invader? If the well being
of society is ever to be well estab
lished, vindicated, with what holy
anger, what burning moral indig
nation should such conduct and
spirit be clearly defined and st rong
ly reprobated? Not that other men
are unrepresssd—within one’s own
bosom one may learn there, as
everywhere, to condemn as God
does, and as all men should, sen
suous lust with its sinful progeny,
and condemning them, seek to ex
tirpate them from the heart, from
society and from the earth.”
“Thou shall not covet thy neigh
bor’s maid servant.”
i “Thou shall notcommit adultery.”
ELECTRIC WIRE FENCE.
