Eugene Irvine, youngest son of
Capt. Irvine is reported as being
quite sick this week.
Miss Ellen Hawkins, who has
been sick for some time past, is
improving very slowly.

Matthew Johnson is again very
sick, we regret to learn, though at
this time he is slightly improved
since a few days ago.
■J. L. Price, of Chattanooga, was
in town on Tuesday last. Mr. Price
is in the real estate business and
was here with a view of making
some investments.
What has become of Bill and
Buck Smith? Have they departed
these coasts? We shall believe so
unless the News shall get a com
munication from them soon.
Mr. F. A. Echols, railroad agent
at this place, moved last Tuesday
from west Summerville to his new
residence in the eastern portion of
town. Mr. Echols in an excellent
business man, clever and accomo
dating, and is very popular with
the public.
Mr. and Mrs. J. Y. Price moved
to town last Tuesday’ and are occu
pying the house in which Mr. Ech
ols has been living. There are no
cleverer people than Mr. and Mrs.
Price, and they’ will be a welcome
acquisition to Summerville so
ciety.

The grand jury of Floyel county
returned a true bill against Dr. J
B. S. Holmes last Friday about
noon, charging him with murder in
the first degree. The warrant was
served that evening and Dr. Holmes
was taken before Judge Gober,at his
room in the Armstrong, who fixed
the bond at $5,000. The following
named gentlemen, of Rome, signed
the bond: J. B. S. Holmes; J. J.
Seay; J. 11. Camp; Joseph J.
Printup; G. W. Holmes; W. II

Major John Liday, of near Men- -
10, died last Thursday morning very i
suddenly. Major Liday was over;
seventy years old and had been in i
i feeble health for two or three years I
past, but, just previous to his
death, seemed to be as well as
t usual. He died, it is supposed
from heart disease, while sitting in
1 a chair in front of the fire.
Last Thursday morning about
1 daylight the shingle mill of Jenkins
- & Bass was discovered to be on fire.
- Mr. Jenkins was notified and hur
-0 ried to the scene but in spite of all
efforts, to the contrary the mill and
e 40 feet of belting and about 8,000
'■ I shingles were burned. This is the
I second time this mill has been
le | burned in the last three months. It
i_ is not known how the fire originated.

A valuable horse belonging to
Mr. John While, Sr, was seriously
injured last Tuesday in a very sin
gular manner. Mr. White was lay
ing off corn rows aud using stakes
to keep them straight, when the <
horse stepped on the stake breaking
it and causing the sharp end to fly
. up, making a bad wound in the
flank which came near bleeding

Election at Lyerly.
There was an election held at
Lyerly some time since, and the re

were nominated and elected as the

the people have, at the highest pri

Willie J. Hawkins, youngest son
of Judge Samuel Hawkins, died at
his home in this place last Saturday
morning of congestion. Deceased
had been sick for several days but
his condition was not known to be
serious until a short time before
his death. The funeral services
were conducted by’ Rev. W. A. Mil
ner at Judge Hawkins’ residence
an Sunday evening; after which
the remainsjwere borne to their last
resting place in the Summerville
etery, followed by a large <on
course of friends. Judge Hawkins
and family have the sympathy of
the entire community in their sud
den and unexpected bereavement.

Rev. J. E. Jones and lady left to
day for Vicksburg, Miss. Mr. .Jones
has until lately been in charge of
the Presbyterian church at Cedar
town where lie was beloved. Our
good wishes go with Mr. and Mrs.
Jones to their new’ home.—Rome

We were shown last Saturday, by
J. I). Taylor, a sample of what is
thought to be fire clay. It was
taken from the land of John Taylor
in the western portion of town and
is to be found in large quantities.
It is in the same ridge as the vein
now being developed by Mr. B. O.
Smith, near Lyerly, and is evi
dently of the same quality of clay,
whether it is the genuine article or
not. Mr. Taylor will probably’
have an analysis made soon and the
result will be awaited with interest, i
