A dispatch from Volestino dated Wednesday says: “The Turks to -1 day were repulsed after five hours’ fighting, with heavy loss. Simul taneously Edhem Pasha’s main I force engaged the Greek outpost at Pharsalos and the fighting lasted from 2 p. m. until 7;30 p. m., both armies retaining their original po sitions.” Following is the official dispatch from Maj. Pallis, chief of staff of the Greek forces in Thessaly, de scribing the fighting at Pharsalos: “The Turks attacked our ad vance posts 2 o’clock. Since yes terday the enemy’s movement had indicated an intention to cut off our left wing, and today the} at tacked our front. Our advance posts retreated, as they were fight ing against very superior numbers, and took up a position in front of our right wing. An artillery duel ensued along the extensive line. The enemy’s infantry advanced in perfect order at three points and in large numbers, but they were speedily checked by our infantry. The respective losses are as yet un known. “The crown prince took a very active part in the combat and ad vanced within range of the Tur kish fire, greatly inspiring the men. Prince Nicholas was equally active at the right wing and directed the fire of his battery against the Tur ish batteries. His coolness great ly encouraged the troops. We main tain all our positions intact and the engagement will certainly be continued tomorrow (Thursday). We. calculate that about 15,000 Turks attacked our right wing. They rushed down the hill slopes in vast numbers. The enemy was our superior in both cavalry and artillery; the caliber of their guns was larger, while their number was almost double ours. We had no cavalry, because the only squadron had been used for scouting and had gone to Trikkala.” There is great rejoicing over the receipt of the official telegram from Pharsalos saying the Turks have been repulsed and that the Greeks hold their positions after a three hours’ battle. A dispatch says I Crown Prince] Constantine and Prince Nicholas fought couragous ly in the front rank, risking their lives a hundred times, and that they had an ovation from the whole army when the fighting was over. The goverment has forwarded to them its warmest congratulations. The king and the cabinet have also addressed a manifesto to the troops, ' congratulating them upon their courage and patriotic devotion. The public is overjoyed and is already forgetting the earlier blun ders of the campaign. A decisive : battle is expected at Pharsalos to morrow (Thursday). According to the newspapers, an Ohio husband became the happy father of seven children not long ago. Os the seven all lived but one. Hood's Sar saparilla is the One True Blood ( Purifier and NERVE TO NIC. I Ripam Tabules: one gives relief. ’ Ripans Tabules; for sour stomach, An Important Point Decided. A very important question came up recently before the Supreme Court of Tennessee for adjudica tion. This was the question wheth er it is legal and constitutional ft r a lawyer, while making an argu ment before a jury, to weep. It seems that a weeper of exceptional weepfulness had secured a verdict for his client by means of his weeps, and the case was taken to the Su preme Court on the ground that the jury had been unduly influ enced by the attorney's brilliant and mellifluous lacrimosity. It was, we believe, the first time this really vital question has ever been tested in the Supreme Court. Objections have been taken to the attorneys smiled at juries to their manner of hectoring witnesses at times, and even to the expression on their faces while a witness was testifying; but it has generally been considered that a lawyer had a right to weep early and often, and where it would do the most good with entire impunity. Os course the decision of the Supreme Court was awaited with the great est anxiety by the weepers of Ten nessee. Would they be compelled to dry their tear ducts and weep no more? But the court was with them, and it has declared that tears are about the only thing that is constitutional in Tennessee. The court prepared a very able and exhaustive opinion from which the followingp<issage is taken : “It would appear to be one of the nat ural rights of counsel which no court or constitution could take a way. It is certainly, if no more, a matter of highest personal privi lege. Indeed, if counsel has them at command it may be seriously questioned whether it is not his professional duty to shed them whenever proper occasion arises and the trial judge would not feel constrained to interfere unless they were indulged in to such excess as to impede or delay the business of the court. Some lawyers deal in logic; others use flights of fancy; others employ only noise and ges ticulation, and yet others resort to well-timed tears. We are pleased to know that weeping now has a legal status, and we congratulate our Supreme Court on being the first to furnish it. We know that the hearts of many of our most eminent sob-ar tists are lighter on account of the decision, and we are glad that this old reliable institution is not to be abolished. Woepingin moderation is a good thing and when a man can make money thereby, it is bet ter. At any rate it is far prefera ble to the oratorical howl. —Mem- phis Commercial-Appeal.
