It is said that President Mc-

The Texas legislature passed
last week a bill providing for a sys
tem of text books in all the public
schools of Texas. The law goes in
to effect in 1898.
The South Macon Courier prints
in its “Guess Who” column the
following: “What young man
asked a certain young lady to let
him ware her ring and after being
granted the privilege went and
powned it?”
We really have not the pleasure
of the young man’s acquaintance.
After reading an account of the
brilliant social affair given last
week by the bogus Lord Beresford,
ex-convict, to the leading people
of Fitzgerald and vicinity, one is
easily led to believe in the doc
trine of evolution, with this modi
fication : that a large portion of
the human family is directly de
scended from the wild asses of the
desert, instead of monkeys of the
forest.
The Georgia Weekly Press Asso
ciation will hold its eleventh an
nual meeting at Cuthbert July
18th. Hon Fleming du Bignon
has been invited to address the
Georgia editors on that occasion
and will no doubt accept the invi
tation. From Cuthbert the editors
will go to the Nashville Exposition
via Montgomery and Birmingham.
A great time is anticipated by the
industrious quill drivers of the
Georgia weekly press.
If the recognition of the bellig
erency of the Cubans by this coun
try means war with Spain, as many
people think, congress had better
consider the matter thoroughly be
fore taking the final step. Noone
doubts the brutal manner in which
the Spanish government is con
ducting the war against the Cu
bans, but if the spark of war should
be started it is difficult to tell
where it would end, or what the
consequences might bo before peace
was finally restored.
Sometime ago Brewer & Hanlei
ter, Grffin grain merchants, tiled a
petition with the railroad commis
sion asking that a reduction of
per cent be made on all freight
rates in Georgia. The matter cre
ated no small interest throughout
the state and its final disposition
was awaited with much interest
Last Wednesday the petition came
up fcr a hearing, and after Mr.
Brewer, one of the petitioners, had
mt.de a brief presentation of his
case Chairman Trammell held a
short consultation with his fellow
members of the commission and
then announced that they did not
care to hear from the railroad men,
a large number of whom were pres
ent. The petition was dismissed
in short order, and the case
which had excited so much inte
rest, and which was of so much
importance to the railroads, was
settled almost before it was begun.

A few days ago Mr. It. A. Pursley
was looking for a steel trap which had
been placed on the creek bank to catch
minks. lie desired to move the trap
to the house but it could not be found.
Next morning, however, he heard a
heavy flapping of wings in a clump of
bushes near the house and going out
discovered a buzzard that was making
desperate efforts to fly, but could not
because of some incumbrance. Going
closer he discovered that the buzzard
had on his foot the identical steel trap
which he had hunted so faithfully for
the day before. It seems that the trap
had been placed near a dead pig on
the creek bank, and that the buzzard
had “pot bis foot in it” while investi
gating the merits of said pig. The
buzzard was released from durance and
went his vile way.
A letter from Mrs. W. A. M ilner
who is now with her brother at
Midland, Texas, states that she has
bee* l quite sick s’uce reaching Tex
as but was slowly improving. She
writes that the Texas people have
been exceedingly kind to her, and
have sustained the reputation of
generous hospitality for which the
Western people are noted. She
writes that there are only eleven
Presbyterians in Midland, and no
church service is held by that de
nomination. She was very sick
before reaching her destination,
but every kindness was shown her
by Mr. and Mrs. Rush, who were
h r travelling companions until
Fort Worth was reached.
Bailiff Horace Copeland has a blue
game hen that has established a new
record for hatching chickens. Some
time ago he set her on fifteen eggs,
and as the stock was very fine watched
them closely. Sunday the hen came
o' ’of the nest with just seventeen
fluffy babies. Mr. Copeland is qnite
positive that there were never more
than fifteen eggs under the hen.—Rome

The prize declamation in Prof. King’s
school in Rome will be held in the
chapel at Shorter college to-morrow.
Prof. King has had an excellent class
during the spring season.
It is a little singular that the schools

Congressman Maddox wants to ex
clude from the mails the circulars of
commercial agencies and associations
which carry on collection business.
Some of these collection agencies are
big frauds and should not be tolerated.
Reputable newspapers have boycotted
them. The commercial agencies pur
sue business on different lines and are
important adjuncts to business.—Sa

Judge Maddox is being urged for ap
pointment on the Ways and Means

by the election of Mr. McLaurin to
the senate. The Ways and Means

tant in the lower house of congress and
Judge Maddox is fully qualified to make
a good member of it.

A slight earthquake shook up all the
eastern half of the American continent
last Monday evening about 1 o’clock.
It was felt in Atlanta. In some sec
tions north and east the shock created
great excitement.
The News regrets to hear of the con
tinued sickness of Mrs. N. C. Ham
mond, near Trion. This good Chris
tian woman has a host of friends who
sympathise with her in her afflictions,
and who will be glad to hear of her
restoration to health.
Mr. W. P. Foster, one of the best
known citizens of the county, died at
j his home at Lyerly, yesterday morning
!at six o’clock. The remains will be
I removed to Floyd county today to be
interred in the family cemetery near
Foster’s mills. Mr. Foster was an
excellent citizen, and a Christian gen
tleman, and had a host of friends in
Chattooga and Floyd counties who will
regret to hear of his death. He had
been in business at Lyerly for a num
ber of years. His health has been
failing for a long time, but with a per
sistence and energy seldom seen he
held up and kept going, when it seem
ed that even stornger men would have
succumbed. To the bereaved family
the News extends its sincere symp
athy in their sad bereavement.
Mr. L. J. Barber, who shot and
killed Frank Osborne at Chickamauga
last Saturday morning, waived a pre
liminary trial before a justice at La-
Fayette yesterday, and will go before
Judge Henry in Rome tomorrow and
ask that bond be fixed sot his appear
ance at the next term of Walker Su
perior court. It was reported here
yesterday that the circumstances lead
ing up to the killing were not nearly
so favorable to Barber as,first reported,
and that if he had been carried back to
Chickamauga for a committal trial
there was a probability of Osborne’s
friends taking the law into their own
hands. The sheriff very easily avoid
ed this chance of trouble, as the pre
li niinray trial could just as well be
held in LaFayette. What the real facts
in the unfortunate affair are remains to
be developed.
