“A Scoop”
The News doesn't make many
scoops —in fact it isn’t much of a
scooper—but occasionally it gets
there.
Monday evening of last week
Mr. H.II. Arrington bought an
interest in the big drug concern of
D. W. Curry, in Rome.
Wednesday the News contained
an account of the deal, which wag
one of more_tba-H passing- interest.
Thursday the News reached
Rome.
Friday, two or three of Rome’s
big dailies had the news of the
trade.
Dr. Curry’s store is one of the
biggest concerns in Rome.
Il is located on one of the busiest
co mers in the city.
It is in a very short distance of
tho offices of the four big dailies.
Oh ! brethren ! brethren !
A Correction.
11 was stated in the News last
week on the authority of one of
i Summerville’s leading attorneys,
that the jury summoned to appear
at the special term of court held
this week, would be expected and
required to serve at the regular
tenn in July.
investigation shows this state
ment to be an error. The jury for
this week was dismissed, and the
regular pannel, drawn at the Jan
uary term will be required to serve
in July. The sheriff, we believe,
■ has already served these latter gen
tlemen with notice to appear. The
statement was made in good faith,
ami on good authority, but it was
simply a mistake.
Card to the Public.
A rumor is circulatiug through
the cauuty that an ,admission fee
wi 1 be charged at the entertain
ments of the Summerville school
next Thursday and Friday nights.
Ihe report is false. The entertain
ments are free to everybody.

The Railroad Wins.
In the trial last Monday of the
case of the railroad authorities vs
m. S. Leigh, one of the subscribers
to the stock of the road, the court
decided against the defendent.
Only one case was tried, and a
certain set of facts was agreed up
!on by counsel to be submitteed to
the court. Really, the case did
not go lo the jury, as it was a ques
tion of law to be determined by the
I Judge.
The defense in this particular
case was an over issue of stock
contrary to the company’s charter,
or rather that'ail of the stock per
mitted by 7 the charter had been
issued and sold to the construct
ion company, therefore the rail
road company had no legal or
valid stock left for the subscri
bers.
The case will be appealed at once
to the supremo court.

SUMMERVILLE SCHOOL.
The Examination of Pupils Be
gins This Evening.
The closing exercises of the Sum
merville High School will begin
this evening about 2 o’clock and
will be continued tomorrow at such
hour as may be fixed.
For the greater convenience of
the pupils and those who may de
sire to attend, the examination of
the pupils today and tomorrow will
be held in the court house, per
mission having been kindly grant
ed by Judge Mattox for this pur
pose.
Thursday and Friday nights the
closing exercises will be held in
Hiles Hall, to which the public
generally, and the teachers in the
county especially, are invited. It
has been reported that an admis
sion fee would be charged. This
is entirely erroneous. It is free to
all, and all are cordially invited to
bo present.
The session of the school just
closing has. been one of the most
successful in its history, not alone
in point of attendance but in the
rapid advancement of the pupils
in ther various studies.
At the teachers’ examination
held two weeks ago, a number of
the pupils of Summerville, Menlo
and Lyerly schools stood their
first examination, and it is under
stood that those of the Menlo and
Summerville schools were about
even as to a general average in ex
cellence, while those of Lyerly stood
a very’ close second.
These facts are mentioned to
show the good work that is being
done by the schools of the county.
Every patron of the Summerville
school is earnestly requested to be
present at the examination today
and tomorrow, thus showing their
interest in the welfare and progress
of the school. The location is con
venient to all, and the accomoda
tions are ample and comfortable.
Entertainment At Lyerly
The ladies of Lyerly will give
an entertainment at the Academy’
on Tuesday night the 22nd inst.
Music and recitations by the young
people will be given and all will
be free except the ice cream and
cake. A nice quilt will be sold to
the highest bidder, and all the
proceeds of the entertainment will
be applied to the building of a
new Baptist church building at Ly
erly.
The ladies who have the enter
tainment in charge extend a cor
dial invitation to the people of the
adjacent communities, and hope to
have present a good representa
tion of the Summerville young peo
ple.
