CUBAN MOBS IN HAVANA
Still Keep the Capital in a
Turmoil.
Havana, Dec. 28— This after
noon a Spaniard named Fernan
dez, a member of the manicifal
I police, was surrounded by a crowd
lof Cubans in Bombay street. Cu
ban and American Hags vere
I waved in his face, hie rifle was
twisted cut of his hands and half
a hundred men yelled to him to
shout ‘‘Viva Cuba Libre” or die.
Fernandez threw up his arms as
if to assent and then when the
mob had quieted down to hear
what he had to eay he cried in
clear tones : “Viva Espana, Viva
Espana.”
Three knives were thrust into
him and tonight he is dying.
It is a favorite sport among the
Cuban young men to stop in the
streets, persons supposed to be
pro-Spanish and to make them
kiss the Cuban flag and cry “Viva
Cuba Libre.” Sometimes these
incidents have their humorous
features quite as often the victims
are viciously treated.
Todoy a fight was started by
some Cubans carrying American
and Cuban flags who declared that
they had been insulted by Spanish
marines- A Cuban drew a pistol
and declaring that he would de
fend the American flag, fired.
Other shots followed. According
to unofficial reports a Spanish
soldier of the Calarava battalion
was killed, a Spanish marine fa
tallo wounded and at least one
other, if not several, hurt.
Chas. W. Gould returned here
today after his second visit with
the suyply ship Comal to Carde
nas, Matanzag and Sagua La
Grande. He reports that there is
no starvation to epeak of now in
this district. Since hie first visit
a mouth ago, 1,000 persons have
moved upon the farms where thej
are supported by the Americans,
pending a crop.

Hog Cholera.
As the raising of hogs will al
most certainly be increased large
ly in Georgia owing to the low
price of cotton, the discovery by
the Federal department of agricul
ture of what seems to be the best
remedy for hog cholera yet found
has practical interest for the far
mers of this state.
It is claimed after many experi
ments that this treatment will cure
at least 80 per cent of hogs which
are attacked by cholera. This dis
ease costs the country a vast a
mount of money every year. It is
said that the loss by hog cholera
was $15,000,000 in lowa alone two
years ago. Every remedy that was I
tried then proved almost utterly
worthless, and when cholera ap- i
peared in a drove of hogs, as a
rule, they all died .
The department of agriculture
has perfected a serum treatmen
wbich it claims will save fully 80
per cent of hogs afflicted with chol
era. Tests made in lowa this year
show that out of 922 animals trea- I
ted 170 died, or less than 20 per
cent, while out of 1,1C7 hogs in ,
other droves which were not trea
ted 879, or nearly 80 per cent,
died.
It will be well for the Georgia
farmers to be posted as to this new
treatment, and they can get all the
necessary information by writing
to the department of agriculture.

A Brutal Declaration.
In a recent interview Admiral
j Sampson said: “It does not
make any difference whether the
Cubans are amenable to the sov
ereignty of this government or
not. We are there. We intend
to rule, and that is all there is
to it.”
The Philadelphia Record calls
this “a brutal declaration,” and
we endorse that remark. It is a
speech that would be unworthy of
any citizen of a free government
and especially one which has just
waged a war in the name of liberty
and humanity. Coming from a
naval officer of high rank it is a
particularly “brutal declaration.”
The Journal has commented on
General Wilson’s speech in Macon
in which ho advocated the con
quest of Canada, Mexico and
pretty much all the rest of the
enrth. Now we have Admiral
Sampson declaring that we are
utterly indifferent to the will and
wishes of a people to whom we
have given our solemn pledge that
they shall have a goveriinent of
their own.
The two speeches are of a kind.
They both breathe the spirit of
military force and domination.
They are both repugnant to the
idea of constitutional government
and to the grand principle of the
declaration of independence that
“all governments derive their just
powers from the consent of the
governed.”
It will be a sad day for our gov
ernment when such theories as
General Wilson and Admiral
Sampson aro proclaiming shall be
put into effect by us either upon a
people outside of our present ter
ritory or the United States.
Wilson and Sampson are, how
ever, true exponents of the imperi
alist idea which is so ardently
supported by the McKinley ad
ministration. — Atlanta Journal.

Advertising Placed the Town
Ahead of all Competitors.
“I have taken notice of one
thing,” remarked a well known
citizen of the county a few days
ago,” and that is that Calhoun has
extended its trade into the territo
ry of Adairsville, Dalton, and oth
er towns to a great extent during
the past ten years and it has been
1 think almost entirely due to
persistent advertising.
“Now out in my locality we
used to go to Adairsville, Carters
ville and Rome and came here
very seldom, but five or six years
ago the big advertisements which
the merchants sent out began to
attract our attention and a few
from our locality came here to
trade. 'The next year more came
and from that time on the amount
of trade from my neighborhood
which came to Calhoun has grad
ually increased until now it prac
tically all comes here.”
There is al»o another notable
effect of this persistent and sys
tematic advertising which the cit
izens above quoted may have over
looked but is apparent at a glance
and that is the fact that a number
of valuable citizens have been
drawn to the town and our popu
lation is receiving constantly some
of the best citizens and most pros
perous persons in the county.
They see that it is to their inter
ests to live in Calhoun and that's
what brings them here. Any bus
iness that has to do with any con
siderable number of people can be
conducted at Calhoun better than
at any other point in the county.
The whole population flows here
lilro n-ntor flows into the bottom
of a basin. They come here be
cause they have to come for other
matters and at some time or other
nearly every citizen of the county
can be seen here. This is what
makes Calhoun a valuable place
