Let Us Press Onward.
On ’ast Thursday the people of
Chattooga county decided by a ma
jority vote that tho saloons of the
county should be closed. This is
an important step in the history
of every county. The day is rap
idly passing in Georgia when her
people will endorse the sale of
whiskey. These reform move
ments, behind which is the Gospel
of Christ, must at some day win
their way to recognition. The
only way to st-p the onward match
of tempe-ance is to silence the
proclamation of this gospel of
Christ, and to destroy the power of
the Holy Spirit. This statement,
the w’orld will not, as yet, accept
but it is true nevertheless. Argue
as you may, “saloon” ot “no sa
loon” means “endorsem?nt” or “no
endorsement,” and the people will
not endorse. It is a movement
like “Banquo’s Ghost” that will
not “down.”
But it is not my purpose in this
article to preach a temperance ser
mon but to tell our people that the
work is not yet done. The aim of
this movement is to stamp its
principles upon the hearts of indi
viduals. Thursday’s work was im
portant and necessary, and, taking
courage, let us go forward in the
work impressing the principles of
this great movement on the hearts
of the people.
Business interests are helping
us. All professions and vocations
are calling for men who do not
drink. Young men are bound to
see that whiskey is destructive not
only of the life to come but of the
life that now is. They are bound
to see that whiskey wrecks every
aim anu lofty ambition and they
must let it alone. We need have
no fear if we will continue to edu
cate and to preach the gospel of
regeneration. As workers for God
our aim should be to stamp every
forehead with intelligence and
every heart with Christianity.
Let’s get hold of the children in
our schools and in our Sunday
schools and our work will tel’ out
in their lives.
Having put our hands to the
plow, let us not look back, remem
bering that it was prophesied of
our Savior, “He shall see of the
travail of his soul and be satis
fied.” With fraternal greetings to
the brethren of the county,
Your humble fellow laborer,
J. W. McWhorter.

THE FIRST BABY.
Its Coming is Looked Forward to
With Both Joy and Fear and its
Safe Arrival is Hailed With
Pride and Delight by AU.
The arrival of the first baby in the
household is the happiest and most im
portant event of married life. The young
wife who is to become a mother delights
to think of the happiness in store for hei
when the little one shall nestle upon hei
breast and latterly she shall hear it lisp
the sweet and holy name, “mother.”
But her happy anticipation quickly van
ishes when she realizes the terrible pain
and suffering through which she must
pass while bringing the little one into
i the world. An indescribable fear of the
danger attendant upon the ordeal soon
I dissipates her joyfulness.
Thousands of women have learned
by experience that there is absolutely
i no necessity for the sufferings which at
tend child-birth; they know that bj
the use of “Mother’s Friend” —a scien
tific liniment—for a few weeks before
the trying hour, expectant mothers can
so prepare themselves for the final
hour that the pnin and suffering of the
| dreaded event are entirely obviated and
it is safely passed through with com
paratively little discomfort.
All women are interested, and es
| pecially expectant mothers who for the
first time have to undergo this trial, it
such a remedy ; for tney know the pail
and suffering, to say nothing of the dan
ger, which is in store for them. “Moth
er’s Friend” is woman’s greatest bles
sing, for it takes her safely through the
severest ordeal of her life. Every womat
should be glad to read the little book

PROHIBITION ELECTION.
The Result as Declared at the
Polls Last Thursday.
An election was held in the
county last Thursday submitting
to the qualified voters the question
of whether or not whisky should
longer be sold in barrooms in the
county. The result was a majority
of 78 votes in favor of prohibition.
Except on the part of a few of
the prohibition leaders very liitle
interest was manifested as to the
result. No organized effort was
made by the antis to carry the
county their way. So far »s known
no whiskey or money was used, and
the election was exceedingly quiet
aud orderly, aud the best of feeling
prevailed throughout. There was
little if any bitter feeling aroused
during the contest, if it may be
called a contest, for which the
people generally are to he congrat
ulated.
Owing to the fact that the farm
ers are badly behind with their
work a very light vote was polled.
There are those who believe the
result would have been different if
a full vote had been cast, but this,
of course, is a matter of conjecture.
Below will be found the result of
the vote by districts :
5 ?
Summerville 124 147
Lyerly 62 23
Trion 80 70
Teloga 13 18

Coldwater 46 26
Dirtseller 23 1
Subligna 18 36
Dirttown 46 34
Haywood 9 19
496 418
From these figures it will be seen
i that a total vote of 914 was cast,
igiving the prohibitionists a ma
jority of 78 in the county.
An election on the prohibition
question was held in this county
• in 1886, and as a matter of iuierest

majority of 305, Lyerly is not
given in the above list, for the
reason that the district was organ

Whisky Men Must Leave Church
Louisville, Ky., Aptil 14.—The
fashionable Walnut Street Baptist
church cf this city, of which the
Rev. Dr. T. T. Eaton is pastor, has
one of tho wealthiest congregations
in the city. After a revival ser
vice tonight Dr. Eaton called a
church meeting to order, and after
a discussion lasting over an hour
the church adopted resolutions
practically dismissing from tho
congregation all members who have
any connection whatever with tho
manufacture and sale of intoxicat
ing liquors. The resolutions were
carefully drawn, so as not to be too
offensive, for some of the wealth
iest whisky distillers and mer
chants in this city are members of
Dr. Eaton’s church.
The first part of the resolution
was an earnest appeal to such
members to give up their business
and relieve the church of the bur
den which has been resting upon
it. The second gives them one year
to either give up their business or
get out of the church.
The question has been under ag
itation in some of the large Louis
ville churches for a number of
years, but tho Walnut street church
is the first one whose congregation
would strike the blow at men rep- [

whisky men do here.
