AGAINST CO-EDUCATION.
The University of Georgia Trus
tees Take Decided
Stand.
Athens, Ga , June 21—The
board of trustees at its session
yesterday afternoon turned down
the co-education proposition by a
large majority. The report of the
committee that had this matter
under consideration was full and
complete.
It recited the fact that many
public institutions were open to
girls in Georgia, such as the state
Normal school and the Girls’ Nor
mal and Industrial school. It re
cited the fact that the University
of Georgia is to be opened during
the summer each year to both
sexes, and that to inaugurate co
education at the university would
entail a large and unnncessary ex
pense. The board does not deem
it wise at thia juncture to agitate
this question.
BoIT Worm.
Atlanta, 21.—1 tis feared
from the indications that have
reached the department of agri
culture at the capitol that the cot
ton crop in south Georgia is in
danger of being partly ruined and
greatly cut down, owing to the
ravages of the cotton boll worm.
Not a day has passed since the first
of last week that urgent communi
cations, sometimes accompanied
by a box of the dreaded worms,
have not been received by the state
entomologist and that official has
been busy studying the best meth
ods known to science of getting
rid 'of the boll worm by whole
sale.

VICTIM STRUNG TO A TREE.
Re Died Crying in His Fear for
the Mob to End His Misery
With Bullets,
Mobile, Ala., June 21.—Patrick,
the atsaulterof Bessie Ireland, near
Scranton, was lynched at 1:40 this
morning. He was taken from jail
without anything further than a
protest from the sheriff, the crowd
being very large.
When the noose was put around
his neck he was asked to say what
he wanted to say. Thereupon he
said he was the man who had done
the deed. Then he cried out:
“Shoot me! Shoot me! Get rid
of me quick’.”
With that he was strung up to
an oak tree and several hundred
shots were fired into his body. The
mob dispersed at once.’
/ Killed By Carbolic Acid.
Mount ainsboro, Ala., June 21.
While Mrs. Thomas Appleton,
postmistress at Homer, a country
postoffice, n few miles in the coun
try from here, was opening the
lately arrived mail, her little two
year-old son, who had followed
her into the office, picked up a
bottle of carbolic'acid, spilling the
acid all over his breast and body,
and he died in great agony a few
minutes later.

Parental Influence.
Coarseness breeds coarseness by
a law that is as invariable in its
operation as the law of gravita
tion. If the mother is loud and
acrimonious in speech and manner,
her daughters are sure to be
equally ill-bred in their ways, and
if the father forgets to be a •(gen
tlemen, his sons may be expected
to follow his example. On the
other hand, nothing is nww con
tain than Chat the display of a
sweet and gentle disposition on the
part of the parents will be reflected
in the growing dignity and self
possession of the children. We are
foolish and unreasonable indeed if
we expect our offspring to exhibit
virtues which we ourselves do not
possess. —Nashville Christian Ad

Good Advice From a Negro.
A sensible negro preacher in
New York, the Rev. Dr. Brooks,
recently gave utterance to some
views which should be more widely
disseminated.
“The trouble is at the door of
God’a churches,” the Rev. Dr.
Brooks began. “If they would
arouse themselves, in less than
years there would be no attacks on
women and no lynching.- But the
negro must, take the advice of his
friends. Self-defense and not re
vonge must be his reward. Siu
must be stopped and tyen the
crime which grows out of it will
stop.
“And I say this as one of the
race. The negro must have and
show more respect for all woman
hood—w"hiteas well as black. He
does not sufficiently respect’his
own color.”
Continuing the preacher censur
ed the churches for weakness, and
said that the colored churches of
different denominations are wast
ing the little energy and strength
they have fighting each other rath
er than combining for the good of
the race and thogbry of God. •
