Will Wear Divided Skirts.
Ten women of Syracuse, in wes
tern Kansas, have decided to re
nounce custom and fashion and
will in future, during the stormy
season, wear divided skirts. The
women who lived on the plains of
western Kansas have long hoped
that acme comunity would declare
against long skirts during the sea
son when the wind swoops over
that region at a velocity of thirty
five miles an hour. It is certain
that many other eomunities will
inaugurate this new custom. Ed
itor Henry Black of S yracuse says
the women of that town will here
after appear in divided skirts
during the windstorm season, and
that those who have not the new
style skirt will not hesitate to wear
the trousers of their husbands and
brothers, without regard to the
comments and jeers of those who
foolishly follow vustoand fashion.
It’s a pity that so many men de
vote their time to laying up some
thing for the rainy days of their
grandchildren.

GORDON’S HOME BURNED.
Much of the Furniture Saved—
The Building a Wreck.
Atlanta, June 21. —The splen
did home of Gen. John B. Gordon,
at Kirkwook, a suburb of Atlanta,
was completely destroyed by fire
this evening.
Mrs. Gordon, her daughter Car
olina and Hugh and Frank, the
two sons of the general were at
home when the fire was discovered.
With the assistance of the family
servants and neighbors, the gener
al's books, pictures and war relics
were saved, but everything above
the first floor was burned.
The general’s residence was a
typical southern home of twenty
rooms and was built in 1869. Gen.
Gordon is on his plantation near
Reynolds, Ga., and the members
of his family are unable to esti
mate the loss.
