A newspaper published out in
Oklahoma makes the following
very sensible and pointed re
marks. It means more than is
obvious at first reading: Some
farmers around here on poor
land make more money than
others on good land. One man
who came here three years ago
with good health and 57 cents
now owns 160 acres free from
debt, while another who came
here with $2,000 in money at the
same time, is preparing to let a
money shark foreclose on his half
section and leave the territory.
A cracked barrel philosopher the
other day explained that as a
breadwinner a hob tailed mule
always beats a bob tailed Hush.

A Farmer on Advertising
I’ve been soaked a good many
times since I started in business
for myself, and I note that it has
always been in the article that
wasn’t advertised. I started in
to the getting soaked business
by buying a lightning rod per
foot and settling for it per inch.
That soaking was followed up
by the purchase of a patent gate
that wansn’t advertised. It was
sold to me on such close margin,
the agent said, that the firm
couldn't afford to advertise it.
I’ve bought everything from
hedge fences to encyclopedias
wasn’t advertised, and if there is
a piece of unadvertised furniture
on this place that is any account
I’ve not fallen over it. I have got
so that when an agent calls on
me with something 1 don’t un
derstand 1 ask him where it is
advertised. If he he can’t show
me anything but a pocketful of
liandbills I call the dogs.
I don’t believe that an adver
tisement will make a good article
out of a bad one, but 1 am all tired
certain that it is not going to
spoil a sure thing. If a fellow
can’t notify me in advance
through some paper that he lias
a winner he can’t do business
with me. Wiley Jones in Agri
cultural Advertising.

There is one method of reduc
ing cotton acreage that there
could not be any criticism of, and
that by taking the acres that
would otherwise go into cotton
and plant something else upon
them, remarks an exchange.
There is nothing that so pays tbp
average farmer as the diversifica
tion of crops and the man who
does this judiciously will
have money to spend and profits
to rake in when' the man who
plants all to cotton or any one (
other thing gets left.

VERDICTS ARE AFFIRMED
United States Supreme Court Pas
ses on Rawlings Murder Gases.
Washington, April 16. —The ■
case of J. G., Milton, Leonard and;
Jesse Rawlings, was today de-! <
cided by the supreme court of
1 the United States against them,
the opinion being rendered by
Justice Holmes. This was a
; criminal proceedings against the
four men, all of them members
of one residing in I
' Lowndes county, Georgia, on a (
' charge of murdering two infant |
members of a family named
' Carter, with which family the |
Rawlings’ had a feud.
i It is charged that they employ-1
ed a negro named Moore to mur
der the entire Carter family and
( that some of the members of the
■ Rawlings family accompanied
him to the Carter residence on
the night of the tragedy. By
making a noise they attracted a
i small boy and his young sister
• outside the house and then shot
• them down. Other members of
the family refused to come out
and therefore escaped. On the
trial all of the members of the
Rawlings family whose names
are given except Leonard, were
found guilty of murder and sen
tenced to death and Leonard re
ceived a .sentence of life imprison
ment.
’lhe supreme court of Georgia
affirmed the verdict and the case
was brought to the federal court
on the allegation of discrimina
tion in selecting the trial jury in
that all professional men were
excluded. The court held that
the men had not been deprived
of any constitutional rights and
sustained the decisions of the
, state courts.
