It Takes
Nerve
Everything depends upon
your nerves. It is nerve force
that causes the brain to direct
the motion of your body; it is
nerve force that causes your
heart to pulsate, and send the
blood through your veins; it
is nerve force that causes your
stomach to digest food, your
kidneys to filter the blood, and
the liver to secrete bile.
In fact, nerve force is the
power that runs your body, so
if you feel worn-out, irritable,
nervous, cannot sleep, or eat
well, have pain or misery
anywhere, your nerves are
weak, and your system run
down. To restore this vitality
take Dr. Miles’ Nervine which
will strengthen and build up
the nerves. You cannot be
healthy without strong nerves.
“For eighteen years Dr. Miles’
Nervine and Anti-Pain Pills have been
my close companions. Early in mar
ried life, while raising children, my
nerves became all worn-out—could not
sleep; had no appetite; indigestion
very bad. and had such awful dizzy
spells. Then I began using Dr. Miles’
Nervine, and at once I began to im
prove, and soon found myself in
perfect health.”

In Memory.
Os our dear sister, Sallie, who
was the daughter of George and
Rachel Rilreath, wife of John B.
Cain, omther of George and
Jewel Cain.
We so often think of her and
the bright sunshine she would
bring to our every heart when
she came to church, that we are
constrained to write to her mem
ory. Sallie has gone from us
never to return, but blessed
thought we can go to her. On
the morning of the 11th of Feb.
1906, the Lord said it is enough,
come up higher, fold thy arms
and rest. Her departure was
like being translated. She had
been afflicted for several years,
yet she was able to look after the
needs of her family whom she
delighted to serve. When she
retired the night before she went
away, she was as well as usual.
After she had gone to bed she
rose up and opened the door for
her son who, for some reason,
had been out a little late. (May
her going away be the means in
the hands of God of opening an
other door f®r that dear son even
the door of eternal life.) She was
over 50 years old, was born again
something over 12 years ago, just
after a baptizing near her father’s
home. Her father being blind at
that time she stayed with him
for her mother to go to church.
In preparing the dinner she had
occasion to cross the creek near
where the baptizing had been.
As she walked along looking into
the water thinking of those who
had just come up out of the
watery grave, she resolved to
give her heart to God, and He
whispered to her, “go in peace
thy faith hath saved thee. ” She,
like the woman “who left her
water pot,” threw her corn down
and ran to tell her father she had
found the Lord. Soon after she
united with the Baptist church
at New Hope North and was bap
tized by Rev. J. M. Coley. It is
needless for me to comment on
her Christian life, but something
I wish to mention, first; her un
changable Jove for her pastor
and the brother and sisterhood
of the church, and her faithful
attendance at church on Satur
day as well as Sunday. Last but
not least, the love she had for
missions and the orphans’ home.
I think work for the orphans
lay nearest her heart. She lived
too far away to attend our mis
sion meetings, but she would
read our home literature and re
turn it with a contribution. Once
she said to us, “you must re
member I have not always been
a missionary.” I said it did you
good to read those tracts, her
answer was; “they help me to
see.”
Sallie, we miss you oh! so much,
your cheerful greetings and
hearty hand shakes at old New
Hope. For you was always like
a ray of sunshine in the midst of
a cloudy day. Yet we will weep
not as those who have no hope.
But rather strive to follow you,
even as you followed Christ.
Your departure has added,
One more link in the golden chain,
Where many loved ones have gone,
Free from sorrows, cares, and pains
Beyond in the eternal home.
Jesus called you to be free,
Up to that home above,
With the Angels there to be
Happy in the [Saviours’ love.

One application of that liniment re

THE PORTLAND VASE.
A Masterpiece That Long Puzzled An
tiquarians of Europe.
The workmanship of the Port
land vase and the material of which
it is composed long exercised the
ingenuity of some of the greatest
antiquarians in Europe. Breval be
lieved it to be chalcedony; Bartoli,
Montl'aucon and others, sardonyx;
Count Fezi, amethyst; De la
Chausse and Misson, agate, while
Venuti decided that it was paste.
Wedgwood's examination of the vase
proved the last opinion to be the
correct one. A layer of white glass
had been fused on a dark blue body,
the exquisite figures being after
ward produced in this layer by cut
ting down to the blue by the gem
engraver, after the manner of real
cameos. Wedgwood also discovered
that the vase had at some time been
broken and repaired. It was his opin
ion that the head which formed the
bottom of the vase was a piece of
some other work that had been cut
down and inserted in the place of
the original bottom, which had prob
ably been destroyed at the time the
vase itself was broken.
By the autumn of 1789 Wedg
wood, after nihny failures, had suc
ceeded in his arduous undertaking,
and the first perfect copy, made in
the famous jasper ware, was finish
ed. Several more copies were sub
sequently made, though the exact
number does not seem at all certain.
These were of various degrees of
perfection and varied in size and
color. Originally sold at from 30 to
'SO guineas each, according to excel
lence of finish, time has, of course,
considerably enhanced their value,
and some years ago, at the sale of
the Martineau collection, one sold
for £294.
In 1810 the Duke of Portland
placed the vase in the British mu
seum, where some thirty-five years
afterward it was wantonly broken
to atoms by a drunken visitor. After
being skillfully repaired it was
placed for additional safety with the
gems.
Authorities are by no means
agreed as to the subject of the bas
relief, though various explanations
have been offered. According to the
museum catalogue, the composition
represents on the obverse Thetis
consenting to be the bride of I’aleus
in ths presence of Poseidon and
Eros; on the reverse, Peleus and
Thetis on Mount Pelion, and on the
bottom of the vase (now detached)
a youthful bust of Paris.

“That face would stop a clock,”
said a West Philadelphia father,
glancing from a window at an unbe
coming pedestrian.
“Why, papa ?” asked the little cur

craning his neck to catch a glimpse.
“Because it is so ugly, boy,” an
swered the father absentmindedly.
It was that evening that the fa
ther came downstairs after dressing
for dinner to find his boy standing
at tiptoe on a hall chair staring up
at the big round face of the grand
father clock and giving the most
hideous twists to his pretty baby
face.
“What in the world are you doing,

“Trying to stop the clock, papa,”
was the surprising answer. —Phila-

Calamitous.
One day a Dutchman, in his shirt
sleeves, was shaving himself before
the glass. His hand trembled so
that he cut off the tip of his nose.
The pain caused him to drop his
razor, which fell on his foot and
cut off a portion of his big toe. He
promptly picked up the two frag
ments, applied them, still warm, to
the open sores and bound them up.
A fortnight later on removing the
bandages fie discovered, to his hor
ror, that he had made a mistake.
He had put the toe in the place of
his nose, and vice versa. Now when
he wants to scratch his nose he is
obliged to take off his boot.—From

"Now, children,” said the teacher

with his hand and, given an oppor

out of his seat and grinned:

“Here,” shouted the depot offi

those trunks around like that?”
The baggageman gasped in astonish
