CHANLER’S GAME.
He is Said To Represent the New

"Washington May 21st —The
I clash between Senators, Tillman,
j Baily, and Ex Senator Chandler
on one side, and President Roose
velt on the other,, was the over
shadowing sensation all last
I week. Instances have been very
j rare when a Prresident of the
United States has publicly de
nounced any one as a liar, or
when members of Congress have
hurled the epithet in the direc
tion of the White House. Presi
dent Roosevelt lias hot Georgia
blood in his veins, and once dur
ing the presidential campaign
and again last year, he called
distinguished people, liars.
Several years ago, Grover
Cleveland, between his two terms
when he was not holding any
public office, applied what
is usually regarded as the vilest
epithet in the English language,
to the then editor of the New
York Sun.
One feature of last week’s sen
sation which excited much com
ment, was the discovery of the
close friendship between Senator
Ben Tillman of South Carolina,
and ex Senator Chandler of New
Hampshire. The latter has not
only been one of the noisiest
wavers of the blood y shirt, and
opposed to separate cars for the
races, but in the railroad rate
bill tight the interests which he
represents are directly opposed
to the interests of Senator Ben
Tillman’s constituents.
Chandler is said to own large
cotton mills in New England. He
wants the Interstate Commerce
Commission to have power to
make rates. Commissioner
Prouty has already intimated
that if he gets the power he will
see that New England cotton
mills are given lower rates to the
west and thus give them an ad
vantage over Southern mills in
shipping to market.
At present, the rate on cotton
goods from Atlanta to Chicago,
and from New England to Chica
go are the same. However, the
rates from New England to
Chicago are 18 per cent lower
than from the Carolinas to Chica
go.
It is also believed that a majori
ty of the present Commission
would trv to make rates to enable
the Eastern trunk lines to carry
more grain to New York and
Boston as against New Orleans
and other Southern ports.
And this is said to be what
Chandler is playing for.
