THE SUMMERVILLE NEWS, THURSDAY, JAN. 7, 1909.
THE CROWDED WATER WAGON
During the past year of temp
erance agitation various brewers’
and distilleries’ organizations
have been going about the coun
try desperately asserting that
prohibition does not prohibit.
Loud-voiced press-agents have
burst into print declaring that
laws only change the form of
drinking, and do not diminish it
at all. So loudly have they pro
tested, that one has been forced
to believe that what they have
been trying to prove is not true;
seldom, if ever, have we heard of
a liquor-dealer being in business
purely for sanitary reasons.
In this year’s report of what is
familiarly called “The Whisky
Trust,” the efforts of that benev
olent organization to save the peo
ple from the results of their own
folly are not shown to have met
with any marked success. Dur
ing the year 1908, the production
of distilled spirits in the United
States was one hundred and
twenty seven million gallons in
stead of one hundred and sixty
eight million gallons in 1907. Os
course no one knows what the
Whisky Trust mathematicians
will do about this, but it looks to
us like a decrease of twenty-five
per cent.
The next time a distillery
press-agent tells you that pro
hibition is only another word for
an unlawful consumption of
whiskey, you are entitled to
a hearty laugh. —Success Maga
zine.

appeal of Georgia, for assistance
in its effort to suitably honor the
name and memory of Joel Cand

of Uncle Remus, may have an
opportunity to visit the scenes

the needed fund by a popular

have a part in the movement. All

THE WINTERS FIREWOOD
Most farmers find it convenient
to cut their supply of firewood
during the winter months. The
removal of this fire wood may
mean so much drain or so much
improvement of the farmer’s
woods, depending on how the
work is done. Generally our
farmers are not careful enough
about the trees that they take for
fire-wood, taking pretty much
everything that comes to hand.
In this way trees that would de
velop into valuable saw timber
are often sacrificed when inferior
trees would answer the purpose
just as well. As far as practica
ble the fire-wood should come
from the dead, crooked, diseased,
and suppressed trees, and the
thrifty, straight, sound trees
should be saved for saw timber.
When lumber is at the present
prices, it is little short of sin to
cut up for cord-wood trees that
bring new, or will in a few years,
bring two or three times as much
for lumber as for cord-wood.
However, there are often many
different kinds of trees in the
farmer’s woods. Some are more
valuable than others. For in
stance, hickory, white oak, yellow
popular, chustnut, locust, and
ash are worth more for lumber
than black jack, red oak, red
maple, sweet gum, black gum,
and the like. Therefore, these
less valuable trees should be used
as far as practicable for fuel and
She others should be saved for
posts, poles and lumber.
This selection not only saves
the better trees of the better
kinds for the higher uses, but it
makes more room for the better
trees to grow. They grow faster
and develop better stems when
they do not have to compete with
a lot of inferior trees.
Every stick of fire-wood re
moved from the woods this win
ter ought to mean just so much
improvement to the woods.
Alfred Akerman.
Forester.
In Loving Remembrance
Os Dr. Thomas Landrum Bal
lenger. Dr, Ballenger queitly
passed from this world to the
fairer world on high Oct. 1, 1908.
Dr. Tom was born in South Caro
lina, April 1, 1858.
While but a small boy he with
his three brothers and their
widowed mother moved to this
county. Here, he has spent his
plesasant symmetrical life, first
as a hard working farmer boy
and since as a loved and success
ful physician.
He will be missed as a doctor
and in the church. He was ever
ready and willing to help in any
work for the cause of Christ. Dr.
Tom was converted when about
18 years old and joind the Mis
sionary Baptist church at Pleas
ant Grove. He remained a faith
ful member of this church until
he moved to Cohutta, Ga., and
was a member of Cohutta church
until he moved to Subligna.
Dr. Ballenger was sick about six
weeks with fever and stomach
trouble, suffering intensely, yet
he never murmered. His sweet
noble enduring spirit which bad
so fully characterized his entire
life maintained him to the end,
always carrying this cheerful
spirit into all the homes of afflic
tion where he has gone. He has
blessed many lives not only with
his skillful treatment of disease
but also by encouraging the
down cast and broken hearted
ones. In the church, where he
has ever taken pleasure in going,
his presence and talks and hum
ble earnest praye- s have been a
great help to all. The funeral
