Miles Medical Co., Elkhart, 104 (Communicated) AN OPEN LETTER. To T. W. Mitchell, Deputy Sov. Com., W. 0. W. Esteemed Sovereign: Your card addressed with unduly soft sentiment to ‘‘The Good People of Chattooga County,” I regard as a deliberate effort to mislead the peo ple about the Columbian Woodmen. There is nothing detrimental you dare say openly against the said Fraternity nor any one of its offi cers. People understand ‘hat inju rious statements or letters circula ted “in confidence’ always in volve falsehood and cowardice. You are, as curs on a strange trail, are liable to do barking up the wrong stump. Col. O. R. Flournoy, a gentleman NOT at. ex-bartender, and NOT found now, nor when he traveled under my Commission for the W. O. W., always with a bottle of liquor in his grip or pocket, stated to me that in Tam pa, Fla., you said the Columbian Woodmen did not pay its ligitimate obligations. Will you state to the “good people of Chattooga county" the rebuke you received? I am now advised that you have written a letter artfullyworded to con vey the false conclusion, without di rectly statirg it, that the Columbian Woodmen has no money. , You cannot say more for the W. Q. W. that I can. You have no fidel- I Ity to give it equal to mine. And ; you will tell me now why you hung • about the Columbian Woodmen of ! flee while drawing a salary from the J W. O. W. in the first days of this ; Fraternity until I told you plainly • that the Columbian Woodmen had I no proposition to make to you, and ; that I didnt believe your visits were • for any honest purpose. Enlighten . us now, as you failed to do so then. Were you seeking employment with • this Fraternity or were you ernulat- • lug tho spy? The good people of i Chattooga county will be glad to ' know whether you felt the Colum bian Woodmen In Its infancy was a • more 'hy cause, that you sought .’.o employment or whether you • thought the W. O. W. was so de . graded in its methods as to wish J an organizer to spy upon another • Fraternity. > You state that an organizer of the J Columbian Woodmen Is represent ' ing this Fraternity as a branch of I the W. O. W. I challenge the truth fulness of the statement. ' The Sovereign Commander has ' clearly set forth the Impossibility of . such an error not alone on account i of the dissimilarity of name, but be ’ cause of the total contrast. In finan i cial plan ami benefits. We never re- I fer to the Columbian Woodmen with out using the first word of the name so that any confusion is impossi -1 bio. We place no Monument at the grave omitting that beautiful and ap propriate tribute performed by the W. O. W. On the other hand we pay total disability, loss of leg, loss of arm, loss of eye, and broken leg and broken arm benefits, also keep the Covenant in force If ill and un able to give notice or make payment, all of which are different from the plain death ami monument benefits of the W. O . W. I am advised that a friend of yours strenuously piled an organizer of the Columbian Woodmen to get him to make some false statement about the two fraternities, but that even these methods failed of their pur pose. In my judgement a man whe would endeavor to lead another Into falsehoods would himself commit them if they would serve his dis honorable purpose. The Modern Woodmen of America is the Original order of Woodcraft. When the W. O. W. eight years la ter was organized the Sovereign Com inander prepared to use and print ed our first literature with the name. “The Sovereign Camp of the World Modern Woodmen of America." but was emphatically admonished that this was an encroachment on the rights of the original order, and therefore changed It to what in my judgment is a better name. W. O. W. But the poiut is that at that time the literature of the W. 0. W. in cluding the Sovereign Visitor teemed with articles where the "Woodcraft" was indiscriminately applied to both the M. W. A. and the W’. O W’. , No such misleading indiscretion has : been committed by the Columbian i Woodmen. For a young and vital Fraternity I to pose as a part of any of the ol- • der assessment orders would be its ' most certain suicide. The Colurn ] bian Woodmen b.»s a financial plan •o much superior, benefit* so much I broader, and an accumulation of sur i plus so much more substantial in i proportion its splendid tnember | ship, and a record of prompt and full I payment of . i .ims so much superior. I that it would oe the sufferer and the I injured part? in my claim that 1 might be rediculously made, as to its connection with any other insti- tution of Insurance in America, stock company or Fraternal, and should we be given evidence sufficient in amount and reliability that we have thus been wronged by any misguid ed organizer, we shall revoke his commission without delay. W’e are not, however, Mr. Mitchell, going to take this action on your word. I will add, however, that if my friend Sovereign George Chidsey of Rome, Georgia, whom you named as one of your deputies, makes such statement based upon his own hear ing and knowledge, it will be ac cepted without qualification. In conclusion, the W. 0. W. Is not in any need of your methods- Straightforward, dignified, truthful representation is all It needs. Fur thermore, should your methods de ter any man, whether he be a Sov ereign or not, from the Columbian Woodmen you do him and his fam ily a deeper injury, a graver evil a more malignant turn than could ’ be given by his lowest and foulest enemy. You deprive him of substan tial relief if he should suffer a brok en arm or leg, or If he should suffer tiie loss of limb or eye. Suppose he should suffer the loss of two limbs or become blind by accident or dis ease, that he Is a Sovereign,—what will you do? Stand over this blind and helpless being unable to earn money to sustain his family or to pay his assessments In other orders, and tell him and his loved ones that the order you represent has nothing for him, tell them you prevented his Joining the Columbian Woodmen which if he had joined would now be in his home with the same sum for . them all, as other orders pay only In i case of death? Is this your work. I have placed in the W. 0. W. I thousands of sovereigns to your one. I I have carried FRATERNITY from . the Rio Grande to the James river, i and never by pen or word sought to prevent any man joining any other i fraternity, or taking other protection. . I am prepared now to say better f things for the W. O. W. than you t can say. I believe better of It than . you believe, for I know it needs no t base and negative methods nor men. I would write a man for the W. O. W i for his advantage, you would debar . a man from the Columbian Wood , men to his personal detriment and • the affliction of his family. We are Fraternalists. You are a “Hatred ! Ist.” The first great benefit Sovereign ’ Root did humanity was to organize the Modern Woodmen as Its Head Consul, next to organize the W. O. W. The first good I carried to eighty ' seven thousand of my fellow-people was to make them Sovereigns, the next is to make them with thousands of others, Worthy Guests. The first . duty you now owe all Is to reform, . cease so be a “Hatredist,” and with , the rest of us become Fraternalists. Most cordially yours, , Jonathan B. Frost, Eminent Consul. R. Lips comb, of Washington, N. C. “He took all kinds of remedies and treatment from several doctors, but found no help till he used Dr. : King's New Discovery and was' I wholly cured by six bottles. MONEY FOR PENSIONS Will Be Sent Out About the First of February. Atlanta, Ga.--The state treasury has on hand now enough money to pay all the p;nsh ners of the state, but it will be arout February 1 before the pensions will be paid, since it will take until that time to get all the papers in ihupe. Commissioner Lindsey is hard at work now on the pension rolls, and by the first of the month will be ready to pay all of the $950,000 pen sion money in a lump sum. The pen sioners will not be paid by counties on different dates, as formerly, but the checks will be made out and mailed to the ordinary in each county on the same date and the pensions will be paid by the ordinaries. Tnere is now in the state treasu ry more than $1,000,000, and it is ex pected the return from taxes and oth er sources will run this amount up within the next week or ten days to almost double that sum. The first steps looking to the ex tension of the Western and Atlantic railroad from Atlanta to the sea were taken when the extension commissior appointed by Governor Smith met at the state capitol, elected Hooper Al exander chairman and appointed a committee to gather information con cerning the feasibility and advisabil ity of carrying the project into effect It was agreed by the commission that the main features of the propos ed extension which it is called upon to investigate are the probable cost, the direction the extension will take, whether the work can be done by convicts, and whether, as a general proposition, it will be advisable for the state to continue its policy of owning a railroad. The committee indulged in a general discussion of these questions, but no definite ac tion was taken. ITASCA, TEXAS Dear Editor: —If you will give me space I will tell my friends in Geor gia where I live. I am two miles from Itasca, in Hill county. I have gone to farming. This is a fine country for farming. This is a black land country. It grows anything here that you plant. This land makes one half to three-fourths of a bale of cotton to the acre. Wheat 25 to 30 bushels per acre. Oats 40 to 50 bushels per acre. No guano at all. One man can tend 50 to 60 acres. Mr. J. R. Pope has the largest tur nips I ever saw. Some of them will weigh ten pounds. We put up about 15 bushels yesterday. We have not had any cold weath er yet. There Is a great deal of cotton in the field yet. W. T.
