$1,000,000 PAID OUT BY STATI
Atlanta ,Ga. —Over a million
dollars have been paid out from I
the treasury of Georgia within I
the past week. Almost all of,
that amount is represented by the j
prepayment of pensions for 1909. |
With this large drain upon it,
the state strong box enters upon I
the second month of the new yeai
badly depleted. In point of fact!
it has been pretty well cleaned
out. Approximately only $90,0000
remains, in funds subject to war-;
rant. That amount does not in
clude the near beer moneys on i
hand, nor the bond fund required 1
to be set apart.
Other money is coming in, iti
is expected, before the end of.
February—probably about $500,-!
000. Revenue will be dribbling!
into the treasury all during the
year, so no crises is being faced.
But the great bulk of the state’s
income will not be available for
disbursement before December,
next, or the first few weeks of
1910.
The exact amonut drawn from
the treasury >x somewhat in ex
cess of $1,019,251.53, which rep
resents the three largest warrant!
involved in the payments during
the the last few days. Os that
amount $76,755.86 went to school;
due from the 1908 fund. The
state sanitarium received its
monthly remittance of $32,916.67
And all the balance, $939,579, rep
resented the prepayment of pen
sions.
This advance pension payment
has consumed even before the
first month of the year is over
nearly a quarter of the state's
estimated income for the whole
year to come.
The figures of that income are
approximated by the State Com
troller Wright at $4,750,000 in
cluding over three millions taxes
on seven millions dollars worth o
property, at 5 mills; special or
miscellaneous taxes, $1,250,000;
$420,000 rental for the state road
W. A. railway; $250,000 poll ta:
and other minor sources of rev
enue
The fact that over a million
dollars have been paid out from
the state treasury within the past
week has no significance in con
nection with any fears that the
state will notbe able at the year’s
end to meet the demands upon
it; but it is regarded as signif
icant when related with the fact
that there are cureent payments
that must be made during the
year, and that the advance pay
ment of pensions has according
to authentic calculations, very se
riously crippled the treasury at
the beginning of the year and
has brought about tight eonditiof
that will require some close sail
ing for the next few months.
That one person in every
twenty in England and Wale
is a pauper, is the appalling fact
brought out in the first three
weeks of the old age pension law.
In London the ratio is one in
fourteen, and the figures gather
ed tell such a story of national
poverty that the government is
believed to be in danger. More
than 5000,000 persons have been
found eligible for old age pen
sions, ami it is expected this total
within the next few months will
reach 6,000,000. Figures compiled
within the last few weeks give
a population to E ngliuid and
Wales of 34,934.600. The num
ber of paupers is 1,709,436. while
2.209,436 receive government aid.

Georgia Prohibitionists to Pros
ecute Because of Whiskey
Advertisements
At a meeting of the trustees
of the Georgia Anti- Saloon
' league held in Atlanta recently
it was decided to prosecute all
I newspapers in the s tate which
' carry whiskey advertisements on
the ground that these papers are
hired agents and solicitors for
whiskey houses.
The Georgia prohibition law
expressly forbids the soliciting
of orders for whiskey in any way
Judge W. A. Covington, attor
ney for the league, was ordered
to prosecute the papers at once.
Superintendent Richards of the
league in speaking of the pa
pers said.
* ‘ They are violating the law
in carrying whiskey advertise
ments, and we feel sure our pros
ecutions will result in convic
tions. In fact ,we have been
told by high officials that such
prosecutions would undoubtedly
be sustained in the courts.”
Rising Star, Tex.
Editor News:—As I haven’t
seen anything from this section of
Texas in some time will endeavor
to give you a few dots.
Farmers are now busy preparing
for another crop and finishing
gathering what they made last
year. There was a good
crop made here last year and
there is still some cotton to
yet. But the majority of the cot
ton crop is gathered and sold.
Though the price is better now
than it has been since we com
menced picking last fall. There
has been about forty-five hundrm
bales ginned at Rising Star this
sesaon.
I have been here three years anc
the longer I stay the better I like
I think this is the best farming
country I have ever seen. It
beats North Georgia three to one.
We have made since we have been
here one hundred and nine bales
of cotton, and that beats what we
done in ten years in Chattooga
county, and we don’t have to
use fertilizer either to make it.
We made sixty-one bales this
year. If there is anybody there
that can beat that with the same
force 1 will give it up and say
no more about Texas.
Rising Star and surrounding sec
tion are getting on a boom now.
They are thinking of getting
a railroad through this part of
the county. If we could get a
railroad it would help us consid
erably.
They are also drilling for oil
at Rising Star and the well is
about one thousand feet deep.
They have been finding some oil
last few days and if we can get
a railroad and an oil well this
country will certainly boom.
We are needing a shower of rain
to settle the dust as we haven’t
had any rain in over a month.
Well, if D. M. 11. don’t get
a foul of me or this falls into the
waste basket I’ll come again.
With best wishes for all of my
old Georgia friends and a dollar
for the editor of the News, I
will close.

The Best Fertilizers for Corn
That the yield of corn from the average farm can be greatly in
creased by intelligent and liberal fertilization has been repeatedly
demonstrated. Large crops of good corn result from preparing the
land well, using the right kind and quantity of fertilizer, good seed
and proper cultivation.
Virginia-Carolina
Fertilizers
will greatly “increase your yield per acre” of com or any other crop.
In some cases remarkable results have been obtained.
Mr. C. W. Caruthers of Sumpter County, Fla., writes: “Words
cannot express the value of your fertilizer. It is really so far ahead
of other companies’ goods, that it would not pay anyone to use other
brands, were they given free and put in the field. I can prove what
I say to be a fact. I made a test on five acres. I used on one half
the land your fertilizer and on the other half another company’s fertil
izer, same grade; the land received the same cultivation every time.
I kept a correct account of the amount of money I got off each half
and I got more from the land on which I used Virginia Carolina,
Fertilizer than I did off the other half. I got f°™ r times as much
corn from the land on which I used your fertilizer.”
