How to Increase the Yield of Fruit Increased fruit crops are more often the result of good manage ment than of good luck. Fruit trees and fruit plants need a liberal supply of Virginia- Carolina Fertilizers The trees absorb plant foods —that is, nitrogen, phosphoric acid and potash—from the soil just the same as any other crop. Experi ence has shown this over and over again. This truth has become so well recognized that “ return to the land what the tree removes if you would expect the best results ” has become an axiom with the best growers. Apple, pear, peach, orange and other fruit trees soon respond to careful fertilization. But be sure to use the best fertilizers. “ I made a test with other companies’ fertilizers,” says Mr. H. O. Lowry, of Manatee County, Fla., “and yours proved to be the best. The yield where I used Virginia-Carolina Fertilizer, was just twice as much as where the other two companies’ fertilizer was used.” Hundreds of users say Virginia-Carolina Fertilizers are cheapest because of their good qualities—give better satisfaction and quicker results. Many facts of great interest and value to fruit growers are pub lished in the new 1909 Farmers’ Year Book, a copy of which will be sent free on application to any of our sales offices. National Association Warns Against Use of Quack Remedies In view of the constant agita tion and misrepresentation with regard to the treatment of con sumption, the National Associa tion for the Study and Preven tion of Tuberculosis has issued a statement in which it states that the only sure cure for this dis ease is fresh air, rest and whole some food. Hardly a week passes without some quack “doctor” or “emi nent specialist,” informing the publie that he has at last discover ul the ivie cure for tuberculosis. After examining every one of these so-called cures, several hundred in number, the Nation al Association states that, one and all, they are misrepresentions or fakes. The so-called “cures” are divided into two general classes. The first class of “cures” in cludes the quack remedies and nostrums with which the public is being constantly deceived. These range in kind from “good whiskey” to pig’s blood or ultra violet rays. Some few of them, for instance are cod-liver oil, linn dust, malt extract, goat’s meat, corn oil, clabbered milk, vegetabl teas, and numerous inhalations of supposed germicides, besides a large number of well-known pat ent and proprietary medicines am numerous disinfectants. None of these are cures for consump tion. They are rather for the mo part of dangerous character and patients who take them may be running a serious risk. Consump tion is caused by a germ which destroys portions of the lungs or other affected tissues. No drugs or medicines inhaled gas, or home made remedies can, by any means kill the germ or close up the cavity in the lungs, as is so often claimed for these specified. Ncith er is it possible to inhale a suffi ciently strong germicide to kill the consumption germ. Such an inhalation would kill the patient before it would kill the germ. Another class of “cures” for consumption, by which many people are deceived, includes the secret remedies advertised by un scrupulous ‘ ‘ doctors ” and “ pro fessors” at heads of so-called “in stitutes.” These people advertise that they can cure consumption at home by means of remedies which are secret and known only to them, or sometimes they adver tise they can cure consumption at the “institutes” through some secret course of treatment. For instance, a “professor” out in Kansas conducts an “institute'' where he claims he has a drug which will surely cure consump tion. A “doctor” in Minnesota says he has a new remedy which lie himself will exploit for the benefit of humanity. A Colora do specialist has advertised a new method of curing the disease. A St. Louis druggist claims to have found how to “dynamite” tu berculosis germs. An “institute’ in a western state has been open ed recently, which pretends to cure consumption, without resort to fresh air treatment, largely by means of massage, osteopathic manipulations and some secret methods. Again the National Association asserts that the very fact of secrecy in these cases tends to discredit the so-called cure. No responsible physician will find a cure for disease and refuse to make it known because of pecuniary motives. These two classes of “cures are not cures at all. Consump tion is a curable disease, however and in some places more than 75 per cent of the patients under treatment have been restored to health. The essentials for the cure of consumption are rest, fresh air and wholesome food. C. R. Kluger, the Jeweler, 1060 Vir ginia Ave. Indianapolis, Ind. writs: “I was so woak from kidney trouble that I could hardly walk a hundred feet. Four bottles of Foley’s Kidney Rem edy cleared my complexion, cured my backache and the irregularities dis appeared, and I can now attend to business every day, and recommend Foley’s Kidney Remedy to all suffer ers, as It cured me after the doctors and other remedies had failed.” Sold by all druggists. The family medicine in thousands of domes for 52 years—Dr. Thacher’s Liver sad Blood Syrup. Compensation The all absorbing question agitating the temperance people of England is the demand of the liquor dealers for|eompensation in cases where the magistrates re fuse to renew licenses. The Rev. G. Armstrong, a Wesleyan Metho dist preacher of England, in an able article printed in the Meth odist Temperance Magazine turns the tables upon the liquor men when he says. “Justice demands that the publican should eompen sate|the state for the unspeakable damages his trade has inflicted upon it.” The following are some of the items of the bill which he says the|nation might fairly lay agains' the traffic: Item 1 —Damages for the de terioration of property in the neighborhood of the license. Item 2—Compensation to employ ers for all that they’ lose on Mon days, ami at other times, through the absence of tipping workmen from their work. Item 3—Compensation to empk ers for muddle-headed work done by’ boozy workmen. Item 4—The cost of the support pauper-lunatics. of all drink produced paupers and Item s—The cost of policemen, judges, prisons and criminal pro cedure, as far as they are due to drink. Item 6—-Compensation to fami lies for death and sickness of members of the family caused by drink. Item 7—Damages for all drink caused acidents, shipwrecks and the like. Item B—Damages for all skill ed workmen whose education has been costly to the|community and who have not given the number o years service in return that, might have been expected from them, ii consequence of their premature death through alcohol. If the state allows this traf fic which has acquired such swol len wealth by’ means of an un earned increment to go scot free with what it has got, the trade ought to consider that it has beer treated with merciful magnanim ity. Does the liquor traffic clamor for justice? It had better tak< care how it utters that prayer, lest God should answer it! What does the law of God say is jus tice for the ox that gored and tin owner who kept it. Does the li quor traffic ask for justice? Ther justice let it be. Justice for bro ken hearts, for desolated homes, for commercial disaster, for the manufacture of paupers, lunatics, incapables and criminals. Jus tice for myriads of little children perishing in hunger and squal or, and reared in filth, disease and moral corruption, to be the scourge of society. Does the Ii quor traffic claim its due compel) sation? What is it? The curse of the righteous God, whose ill termost wrath rests upon all sys tems that make traffic of tin manhood which is so precious in His sight that lie has redeemed it with the blood of His own Son. A Common Cold We claim that if catching cold could be avoided some of the most dangerous and fatal diseases owuld never be heard of. A cold often forms a culture bed for germs of Infectious diseases. Consumption, pneumonia, diptherla and Scarlet fever, four of the most dangerous and fatal disease: are of this class. The culture bed formed by the cold favors the devel opment of the germs of these diseas es, that would not otherwise find lod gement. There Is little danger, however of any of these diseases be ing contracted when a good expector ant cough remedy like Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy is used. It cleans out these culture beds that favor the de velopmet of the germs o fthese dis eases. That is why this remedy has proved so universally successful In preventing pneumonia. It not only cures your cold quickly, but minimizes the risk of contracting these dangerous diseases. For sale by Summerville Drug Co. fS, MIA For infants and Children.
