Mrs- Jackson, of Chattanooga, is the guest of Mrs. A. L. Mur phy. Mrs. G. O. Alexander, of Ross ville, is spending this week with her parents at the Gilbert Hotel. Mrs. F. G. Meniman and chil dren, of Rome, are guests this week of Miss Jimmie Grambling. Mrs. Mary Beauford Hill of Blanche, Ala., is visiting her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. G. J. Wil son, this week. Rev. and Mrs. R. S. Burwell left Tuesday for Charlotte, N. C., where Mr. Burwell will enjoy a month’s vacation, which has been offered him by his churches Miss Maggie Wilson and Miss Mary McWhorter have return ed from an extended visit to friends in Blanch, Ala. Mr. Fred Wiley of Carrolton, and Mr. O. D. Evans of St Louis are guests of Messrs L. J. and C. C. Godwin this week. Mr. Walter Housch of Chick amauga spent Sunday with home folks. Capt. Thompson Hiles of Rome, spent Wednesday in Summer ville. Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Rich of Menlo, spent Tuesday here the guests of their daughter, Mrs. H. D. Mallicoat. ' Mrs. A. S. Hinton and child ren, who have been visiting rela tives at Tate, Ga., for some time, returned home Tuesday. Solicitor General W. H. Ennis of Rome, was in town Wednes day. Mr. Charles Henry of Rome, is spending a few days with rela tives here. Miss Fannie Gilbert, attended the Association at Menlo Sunday and the tent meeting at Lyerly Sunday night. Miss Lois Brand entertained about twenty guests at the Par sonage Monday afternoon, from four to six o’clock. Sept, the 2, 1907, being her sth birthday. Merry games and dainty refresh ments were enjoyed by the hap py little people, who all agree that MissLoisis an ideal hostess. Rev. W. M. Sentell came up from Macon last week and is vis iting the family of his father Mr. A. T. Sentell, near Menlc. He will return to Macon the later part of the week accom panied by his wife and children, who have been with relatives in the county for several week. Rev. W. P. Lovejoy, presiding elder of the Dalton district, will preach at the Presbyterian church next Sunday morning at 11 o’clock and at the Baptist church at 7:30 p m. He will al so hold quarterly conference 3:00 p. m. at Baptist church. For thfc reasons above mentioned Rev. J. O. Brand calls in his ap pointment at Wayside. Mr. Eugene Taylor entertained informally Monday evening in honor of his.friend, Mr. William Steel, of Lafayette. Fillers Our School To say that we are justly proud of our public school is a mild statement. We are jubilant. The indications point to the most successfull term in the his tory of the school. The doors were opened Mon day morning and about one hun dred and twenty pupils filed in to place for work. A large num ber of patrons and friends pres ent enjoyed the opening exer cises which included an address by Prof. Whittenberg of cordial words of welcome for both pu pils and visitors. Song by the children. “Our Father in Heaven we hallow Thy name.” Prayer by Mr. B. O. Henry. After the song, “America” enthusiastic speeches were made by Hon. J. D. Taylor, Judge J. M. Bellah, Mr. B. O. Henry, Mr. N. K. Bit ting and Mrs. W. V. Whittenberg. I The building and grounds have been much improved. Thanks to the members of the Improvement club and these ladies are determined that the good work shall go on to comple tion. We have a fine crops of teachers efficient, thorough and persever ing, and with the necessary co operation of parents and pupils, the success of our school is as sured. Messrs Morrison and Duna way, of Rome were here Monday on business. Rev. W. S. Megginson came down from Mineral Park Mon day to visit homefolks and friends here for a few days. Mrs. E. D. Godwin, who has been visiting her daughter in Carrolton, returned Tuesday, accompanied by Mrs A. J. Wiley, Miss Bessie Godwin spent Sunday with relatives in Dry Valley. Mr. and Mrs. John O’Barr, of Subligna, were here Monday. Messrs. John Alexander, J. L. Hammonds and Robt. Williams from North Chattooga were here Tuesday, and report crop condi tions fine in that section of the county. Miss Annie Cleghorn returned Monday from Chattanooga where she had been the guest of her sister, Mrs. Pitner, for several days. Mr. B. F. Flournoy and fami ly moved from Trion to this place the first of the week. Mr. Flournoy comes to Summerville to get the school advantages of fered here for his children. Hon. Gordon Lee, the Seven th’s popular congressman, was in Summerville a short while Tuesday. He was enroute to Subligna where he went to deliv er an address at the Farmers’ Union rally held there Tuesday. He was accompnied by Col. Wes ley Shropshire. Mr. Lee is very popular in Chattooga and our people are always glad to have a visit from their congress man. All parties interested in the grave yard at the J. N. Alexan der old place, three miles east of Trion, are requested to meet there next Saturday, Sept. 7th, for the purpose of cleaning it off. —J. H. Alexander. Mr. J. H. Thomas, of Trion, was exhibiting a very fine limb of cotton on the streets yester day. It contained one hundred and twenty forms, including many bolls of all sizes. Mr. Thomas says the stalk from which the limb was taken is ' nearly six feet high and contain ' ed three hundred and thirty' forms. This is a new kind of ■ cotton which Mr. Thomas plant ed for the first time last year. He gave SIOO for a little hand full of the seed and planted ten rows. : He saved the seed from the ten rows and had enough to plant two and a half acres this year.
